As a mom, time stops for us when we give birth to our baby(ies). The first coo, our heart explodes. The first baby step, we get those butterflies as we run over to help our tumbling little. Our little boy’s first soccer goal, we jump and scream as if no one is watching. These little moments are the moments we live for and moments that time stops for. No one could’ve prepared me for when I first held my babies after giving birth… the kind of moment that takes your breath away. Happy moments, time stops. Bad moments, time stops. Dreadful scenes emerged during week 17’s NFL season, as the Buffalo Bills took on the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bills’ safety Damar Hamlin collapsed...
As I’ve watched Hurricane Ian strengthen over the last few days and head straight for Florida and to the East Coast, my heart hurts knowing the impact the heavy rain and winds will have on their communities. I immediately wanted to do something. For a moment in time, I was reliving what so many of us lived in August of 2016 and other Louisianans experienced with Hurricane Laura (2020) and Hurricane Ida (2021) – the cries for rescue, the fear of the unknown and the questions of what to do. There are a few things we Louisianians have learned since August 2016 so I thought I would put together a list compiled out of love from your Louisiana neighbors....
As I have been scrolling social media lately, I have seen more posts about leaving Baton Rouge than anything else. I know crime has been on the top of everyone's minds as the recent news of an LSU student being senselessly killed last week. As a mom of a seventeen-year-old myself, I have spent the past few days reflecting on what we as a community should be doing differently in and around Baton Rouge. For me, making a statement of leaving or "getting out of dodge" is a bold statement and also takes resources most people do not have at their disposal. For our family, that is not the answer. For us, we are spending time investing in our community. We...
We live in an imperfect world. I used to live life somewhat unbothered by the tragedies of the world. It was easier to disconnect from that stream of sadness. Maybe it is because I have more time to kill by closely following headlines, or maybe I am just officially that old, but the nature of the news does haunt me these days. The 2020s have been hard, and in the context of raising babies and toddlers in a happy bubble, it has been challenging to navigate the opposite natures of those worlds. As a parent, your list of responsibilities is exponentially longer. At this point, I have some confidence in my ability to persevere through some tough times. There is...

8:46am, Where Were You?

I was a freshman in college in Greenville, SC. I normally wouldn’t be up that early, but we had a soccer game in Atlanta and had to be on the bus for 9:30am, which meant we’d better be at the field house by 8:50, at the latest. As I walked up, Pickens (one of guys from the men’s team) called out, “Have you seen?! We’re under attack!” I laughed at him, he was always joking about something. “No, seriously, someone’s bombed New York.” It was still hard to believe. Attacked? New York? What? As I stepped in the field house with the rest of the team, we stared at the tiny tv as the second plane hit. Somber. None of...
