I was scrolling through my Instagram feed and I ran across this quote: "You can do anything but not everything." I paused. The rhythm I've developed when I scroll doesn't include stopping at the quotes. I follow some design feeds because I love to be inspired by beautiful things so when the quotes show up, I usually scroll... faster. NEXT. But this one stuck with me. I've been thinking about it ever since. The first four words are easy to digest, "You can do anything." Of course I can. Sure I can. ANYTHING. I'm so happy that it's not a new concept for me or my generation. My parents weren't necessarily intentional about having me believe that because it just WAS. I felt...
It’s the end of a long day. The husband worked a 12-hour shift. The kids and I had a playdate and a full homeschool day. Together we washed, dried, folded, and put away 4 loads of laundry. And now it’s dinner time. Together time. So we sit down to a delicious meal of liver and onions with a side of sautéed squash. WAIT! WHAT?! Yes, you read that right. My seven and four year old daughters will eat squash, and onions, and liver. How did this happen? Getting the kids to eat well and eat unusual foods didn’t happen overnight, and it was definitely a trial and error endeavor. We’ve had a lot of misses along the way. We STILL have a...
Recently a wise friend told me that I had to be brave.  We were having a conversation about feeling pulled in multiple directions, and she said that “Brave” was my word.  She then asked me what that meant in my life.  After some thought, I replied, “To write and call myself a writer.” Quite simple really, or it looks that way when typed out in front of me, but truthfully it is much harder.  Writing has been a simmering passion in me since I was ten years old.  Repeatedly though, I have turned down the flame only for it to bubble back up to the surface.  Whether it is fear that turns the knob or doubt or busyness or procrastination, one...

Musings on Beauty Part 2

van.i.ty noun excessive pride in or admiration of one's own appearance or achievements the quality of being worthless or futile My conversation with a local professional photographer: Me - “I can’t believe women aren’t knocking down your door to have their portraits done!” Photographer  – “Many women don’t want to seem vain.” VAIN?!? That was the last thought on my mind as my sister and I experienced a wonderful bonding afternoon having our makeup and hair done. We posed for “beauty” portraits and left giddy and feeling great about ourselves. This was a birthday present for my sister. Of course, everything is more fun with a friend, so I had to suffer through it. My mother was the one who encouraged us to buy the prints from...
We are expecting our second child in November and couldn't be more thrilled!! And a little terrified, let's be honest. I am blessed, honored and grateful to have this little life inside of me. But bringing another person into the fold will be a major adjustment for us all, perhaps for my 2-year-old more than anyone else. In addition to speaking to her about all things Baby, we've also been reading her story books about becoming an older sister and I think it's been truly beneficial. I've probably read about 40 of these types of books for children over the past 7 months, which is a significant amount...BUT there are probably at least 100 on the topic, so I can't say I've read them...
