It may take two to make a baby, but not every family has two parents on hand to raise the babies. I am an offshore wife, married to a man who works and lives on a boat every other Wednesday to Wednesday. Therefore, I am a solo parent to three girls under four, every other Wednesday to Wednesday. This is what we call #girlweek. Solo parenting is different than single parenting. I still have a husband, despite the many selfies of me and the girls. You are correct, social media stalkers, he misses a lot, including five out of the five Mother’s Days since becoming a mother. But in real life, he probably just FaceTimed the girls while they ate their...
Thank you, Mr. Star Thrower Most of you have come across various adaptations of “The Starfish Story.” It is often used by motivational speakers who, after recounting the story, encourage their audience with the moral of the story: “Each person can make a difference.” It is a meaningful story with an impactful message. The original story is called “The Star Thrower,” a 16-page essay by Loren Eiseley, published in1969. If you look on Wikipedia, you can read an excerpt from this story, and from this small paragraph, you will discover why the anthology is 16 pages long. I have not yet had the luxury of reading the entire Eiseley essay, but from the excerpt, even more, thoughtful conclusions can be...
Does it always seem that you happen upon the perfect gift for someone in April, but the occasion isn’t until the end of the year? You decide to leave the perfect gift. Then along comes the event and you are scrambling to come up with something. Then you need a gifting closet. My gifting closet is my favorite money-saving and last minute stress-reducing hack. Don’t let the fact you don’t have a dedicated “closet” keep you from creating a space to store gifts, cards, and wrapping paper. My gifting closet is 2 shelves in my kitchen pantry next to all my Tupperware, crafting supplies, and too many water bottles to count. I love giving gifts, from birthdays to those random...
Three years ago this month, a couple of friends and I started a book club. We started strong with Becoming by Michelle Obama and I’m happy to report that we’ve been meeting monthly ever since. As a lifelong reader, it’s astonishing to me that I’d never been in a real-life in-person book club before this one. This is my first ever in-person group and it has exceeded my expectations! Of the original group, five out of six of us are still actively meeting, even though one woman lives in New Orleans and another Zooms in from Denver; the seventh person moved to France, so we give her a pass! Bookclub is one of the highlights of my month. I...
There are certain things that make time stop and crawl at a painful pace. For our family, this has been our past few weeks. Around Thanksgiving, my husband noticed his lymph nodes in his neck felt off and swollen. After they did not resolve themselves and shrink back, he decided to seek medical attention. This began the roller coaster of blood work and tests (30 different tests in one month to be exact). At this point, we are eliminating things that ARE NOT happening inside his body in hopes that the process of elimination would show exactly what is going on. This is a hard spot for me... our bodies are incredible beings. There are so many parts interacting (or...
