It seems all of us, parents and kids alike, are struggling with fatigue year-round. A common topic of conversation with other mothers is how there are never enough hours in a day to accomplish the busy schedules we have and it leads to fatigue or even exhaustion. As a working mom, this a struggle for me too. I work full time but also want my child to be involved in activities, prepare and share healthy family meals, and take care of the needs of my family, but it can be exhausting and often feel impossible to do it all. As a registered dietitian, I know there are some healthy habits my family can adopt to help fight fatigue. As...
How to Beat that Back to School Rut Every year summer comes to an end, and one particular thing pops into mind ... school is about to be in full swing. I don't know about you, but the mere thought of anything school related gets me anxious as all get out! The summer has had its crazy moments with the kids being home making this mom ready for some organization (and quiet time). What I am not ready for is all the homework, earlier mornings and bedtimes. I am not completely a rookie to this whole 'school-aged' child thing. This year, my oldest will be entering into first grade, and my middle child will be entering kindergarten. With the completion of...
It's been a sweet summer over in Facebookland with all the new babies that have been showing up in my news feed on a regular basis. Almost weekly this summer, it seemed that someone I knew was announcing the birth of their new baby! And now that summer is over, many of these friends with new babies will be returning to work. The status updates are all the same, "Enjoying the last few days with my sweet baby before Mama has to go back to work." There is a sense of panic that the first several days back at work (the first day especially) will be just too much for their mama hearts. And in a way, they are...
Most moms I know have, at one point or another, dreamt of being able to work from home. Stay at home moms would like a little extra income and something to do. Working moms would like the flexibility of not having to be at a physical office from 8-5. When the opportunity for me to work from home came from a major tech company, I couldn't resist. Nine months later, I've gotten into a groove and have learned first hand the good, the bad, and the ugly about working from home.  The Good: As every Red Stick Mom knows, traffic in this town is a disaster. Not having to fight I-10 every morning is a huge blessing. Shout out to...
As my pregnancy comes to an end I’ve been going over the final preparations for baby’s arrival, including lining up daycare. Thinking about dropping off our infant reminded me of how terrifying it seemed to me with our son. Looking back I can see how much my perspective has changed over the last three years. I had the guilt that seems so common for moms to feel as they leave their baby to return to the workforce. I mean, I’m paying someone to experience all these milestones with my child while I’m at work?! It was a struggle, but over time it became routine and I got used to it. It’s hard to believe I’m even going to say this,...
