Let the Good Times Roll: Why Participation in a Mardi Gras Parade is a Must-Do

Let the Good Times Roll: Why Participation in a Mardi Gras Parade is a Must-Do

I still get goosebumps thinking about my first Mardi Gras parade experience. The music, the colors, the energy of the crowd… it was like nothing I’d ever experienced before. And when I joined “The Pickles” Mardi Gras Krewe, I knew I was in for a treat.

Riding on a float, tossing beads to the crowd, and dancing through the streets with my friends Clair and Shonda … it’s a feeling that’s hard to describe. But I’ll try.

Here are just a few reasons why I love participating in Mardi Gras parades:

Riding on a Float:

  • I get to wear a fancy costume and feel like royalty for the day (even if it’s just for a few hours!).
  • I love tossing beads and throws to the crowd and seeing the smiles on their faces.
  • It’s amazing to see the city from a different perspective – from atop a decorated float.
  • And, of course, I get to make unforgettable memories with my friends and family.

Walking / Dancing / Playing Music in a Parade:

  • I love dancing through the streets and moving to the rhythm of the music.
  • It’s so much fun to play music, sing along, and just generally have the time of my life.
  • I love seeing the smiles on the faces of the people watching the parade.
  • And it’s amazing to feel like I’m part of something bigger than myself – a celebration of community and joy.

Of course, it’s not all fun and games.

There are the inevitable costume malfunctions, the struggle to get everyone in the right place at the right time, and the occasional (okay, frequent) debate over who gets to wear the most sparkly costume.

Let the Good Times Roll: Why Participation in a Mardi Gras Parade is a Must-Do

But despite all the chaos and craziness, participating in a Mardi Gras parade is an experience I’ll always treasure. And it’s not just about the party – it’s about the friendships I’ve formed along the way.

I’ve had the chance to reconnect with old coworkers and friends during the parades, and it’s always a highlight of my day. And even though I’ve never kept up with who wins the various parade competitions, I know that’s not what it’s all about.

So if you ever get the chance to ride in a Mardi Gras parade, don’t hesitate. Join a Krewe, grab some feathers and jewels, and get ready to party like it’s Mardi Gras!
