Hispanic Heritage Month is celebrated in Baton Rouge from September 15 to October 15. The month recognizes the history, culture, and contributions of people with ancestors from Spain, Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. Red Magnolia Theatre Company will be honoring this month with a staged reading of “Real Women Have Curves” by Josefina Lopez. This staged reading will be performed by an all-female Latino cast (Ana: Sara Milton, Pancha: Diana Cordero, Carmen: Teresa Alvarez, Estela: Paula Shreve, and Rosali: Samera Welch) and is directed by Stephanie Bartage.

Real Women Have Curves

This play is set in a tiny sewing factory in East Los Angelas in September of 1987 and is focused on the experience of five female characters as they experience the issues of gender politics and the Latina immigrant experience. The story is told from the view of the youngest employee at the factory, Ana, who yearns to go to college and become a writer but does not have the money. This play follows a week at the factory, where the women talk about their lives, loves and their deepest desires as they attempt to meet impossible production deadlines.
