Fall is here (even though in south Louisiana it is hard to tell)! With it comes pumpkin spice and all things nice. This is often one of the busiest times of year for families, and as a mom time is hardly ever on our side. In between chauffeuring kids, cooking meals, working jobs, and being wives it can be far too easy to slip into a style rut. Maybe you have traded your inner fashionista for yoga pants and dance mom/sports mom tees. Well I am a firm believer that when you look better you really do feel better. So here are a few tips of the season to help you “fall” into style.
Colors of the season:
This season the colors to be seen in are wine, purple, mustard yellow, olive green, and my favorite rust orange. The great thing about being on trend with color is that they are easy to find on any budget. It doesn’t matter if you are on a boutique budget or shopping in the clearance section you will be able to find the colors of the season everywhere. Putting on one of these warm tones can also make you feel amazing. You can add them into your wardrobe with accessories or staple pieces like dresses and blazers.
Maximize your Maxi:
Maxi dresses are wonderful transition pieces. And it doesn’t hurt that they are made to fit any body type. They are easy to maintain, and you can dress them up or down. What I really love for my fellow Baton Rouge mommas, is they go from spring to summer to fall very easily. Pair your favorite summer maxi with a jean jacket or cute blazer and you are dressed for a perfect fall day. This is especially true for those days that start cool and get extremely warm as the day goes on — simply remove your jacket as the temperature rises. The other major plus about these dresses is they require very little prep work. As a mom I want to look good with minimal effort. I can throw this on without ironing most of the time.
Not your Mom’s Jeans:
Jeans, the bane of many women’s existence. Well not anymore! Jeans come in every style, shape, size and color. This fall the trend of course is the traditional denim but also colored denim. Find yourself in a pair of colored skinny jeans (for the curvy mom try a jegging – so comfortable) and an over-sized dolman top, and you will look polished without trying too hard. These items can be found at retailers like Old Navy, Khols, Forever 21, and Charlotte Russe in every size. The beauty of this style is you can run errands in it, do school drop-offs, and then head into the office or on a date with your honey.
The Accessory:
I find that as moms we pay attention to detail in almost every area of life, but when it comes to our own style this is where we miss it. A simple scarf, belt, boot, handbag or jewelry piece can punch up the style volume on any outfit. The best part is accessories are often the cheapest things to add to update a fall wardrobe. One key piece to add this season is the riding boot. This is not really a new trend; it has been in style for a few years (which makes it a good investment, it’s not going anywhere). Riding boots are quick, easy, and COMFORTABLE. They go with jeans, dresses and skirts. Boots are also quite good for running around after a toddler (I have tested this theory).
When adding your jewelry piece think of yourself. Be you. I love a large statement piece on top of a turtle neck or around the collar of my button down, but a simple layering necklace with small studs or a scarf can complete a look just as beautifully. When getting dressed have your accessories in a quick easy access spot — that way you can grab them and go as you are getting dressed.
Look, I know your kids don’t care about what you look like (especially if they’re small). They probably tell you look like a pretty princess no matter how many days you’ve worn those sweats (unless they’re teens then it’s just brutal honesty). But this time, it’s not about them. This is about you taking a little time to feel good and look good for you! Proving that being a mom does not mean letting yourself go, but allowing yourself to be great. This fall take a little time to see yourself as one hot momma.
