Madison Preparatory Academy Thrives as Multi-Generational School by Prioritizing Culture and Families
For over a decade, Madison Preparatory Academy has served as a staple in Baton Rouge’s education scene and in many families. Serving to foster educational and social growth for all students Madison Prep has become a hub for excellence in its community.
Founded 15 years ago, Madison Prep has remained committed to creating a relational environment among students, family, and even alumni. This relationship has begun to bear fruit as alumni have returned to the school, entrusting them with their children’s education.
“Families who’ve been with us are sending their children back to us,” said Dujan Johnson, CEO of Community Schools for Apprenticeship Learning (CSAL). “So we are [seeing] second-generation pushing third-generation students,”
Johnson, who previously worked at the Young Leaders Academy (YLA), has applied lessons learned from his time there to shape Madison Prep’s positive culture. His approach includes building community relationships, engaging students in meaningful conversations, and organizing educational travel experiences—elements brought from YLA to build Madison Prep’s success.
Other key figures behind the school’s legacy include East Baton Rouge Parish Superintendent Lamont Cole who served as Principal at CSAL Middle School and Madison Prep Principal Alisa Welsh, both of whom worked alongside Johnson since their days at YLA.
This culture also extends to the school’s staff. Combating a national decline in educators, the school has been able to tap into its alumni network, with several former students joining as staff members.
“Despite the competitive environment we are experiencing in education, we still are holding on to a lot of people,” said Johnson, something he contributes to the school’s legacy.
As the environment of the school has grown, so has its academic performance. Madison Prep has continued to be an educational and athletic powerhouse having top-performing athletic teams and being recognized as a national Blue Ribbon School.
