Mom’s Guide to June {Baton Rouge Family-Friendly Events}
This month, we’re highlighting a great event from our sponsors at BREC, American 
Radio Relay League Field Day happening on Saturday, June 24, at Highland Road Park Observatory. The Baton Rouge Amateur Radio Club will take part in an exciting nationwide emergency exercise. Temporary stations will be set up at HRPO as BRARC joins similar clubs across the continent in an exciting emergency exercise. Field Day is a 24-hour endurance session of skill and suspense. HRPO patrons are welcome to learn more about amateur, or “ham,” radio at this fantastic annual event. Remember, if you like what you see at Field Day, there will be plenty of friendly “hams” around to tell you exactly what you need to do to obtain your own amateur radio license and start transmitting! June 3 :: Explore dinosaurs and their prehistoric world through a variety of interactive activities at our second annual Dino Day at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.
June 3-4 :: 17th Annual Pond & Garden Tour hosted by Harb’s Oasis for Charity: “Families Helping Families” – $20 Ticket to tour up to 8 Ponds & Gardens. Tickets for sale at Harb’s Oasis Garden Center.
June 4 :: Want to meet Jason the Triceratops and his prehistoric companions for free? With complimentary museum admission and $6 unlimited admission to planetarium shows, this June First Sunday at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.
June 5 :: Celebrate Fire Safety at the Central Branch Library and climb aboard a fire truck when members of the Central Fire Department visit to talk about fire safety and answer questions about what they do.

June 8 :: Storytime at Lulu & Bean will include 20-30 minutes of interactive reading of books best suited for babies and toddlers, up to age 3. Snacks will be served for all as well as coffee for parents!

Put on your gloves and goggles in order to discover the answer to this question during BASF Kids’ Lab: Chemistry is Bananas! at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum. BASF Kids’ Lab requires adult participation and is offered on a first come, first served basis with registration beginning the morning of the program, and space is limited. Participants may preregister Monday through noon Thursday prior to the program by e-mailing [email protected]. Groups that schedule in advance may receive confirmed reservations and discounted admission rates.
June 12 :: Listen to poems about fathers and create a scratch art present during A Gift For Dad at the Bluebonnet Branch Library. Registration is required.
June 13 :: Celebrate Dad with Happy Father’s Day – Session 1 at the River Center Branch Library.Listen to My Dad by Anthony Browne. Then, create a tool chest ornament with a card to give for Father’s Day. Limited availability, for more information call 389-4959.

June 14 :: With Father’s Day Handprint Tie Story & Craft at the Zachary Branch Library, children can decorate a special tie for their father and personalize it with their handprint after listening to a story about a father and daughter called Hammer and Nails by John Bledsoe.
June 16 :: Beer Club: Beards & Beers (Father’s Day edition) at Whole Foods Beer club tickets make a great gift for all the beer savants out there. Menu will include a Charcuterie board featuring beer cheeses, Brats w/ beer mustard, finished with specialty cannoli for dessert…all of this paired with 4 to 5 beers. Space is limited. June 16 :: Individuals with disabilities and their family and friends are invited to attend Families Helping Families Luau at BREC’s Liberty Lagoon, which includes swimming, music, snacks, and fun! June 17 :: For Dog Day of Summer at BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center, we drop our “no pets” policy and open our doors and trails to pets four days out of the year! All pets are welcome, but they must be on a leash and have their vaccinations current.
June 17 :: Daddy and Me: BB8 is made for Dads (or anyone considered a dad) and their children (young and old)! At this special class, we will be painting the “BB8” painting. Ages 2-12 will paint on an 11×14 canvas ($25) and ages 13+ will paint on a 16×20 canvas. Each painter will need to register. Light refreshments will be served. Younger painters will finish early and may not need to stay the full 2 hours.

June 29 :: Come and listen to Iggy Peck, Architect by Andrea Beaty at the Jones Creek Branch Library. Afterwards, children can try their hands at architecture with Marshmallow/Toothpick Building. Registration is required.
**Give Back Opportunity**
Our sponsors at Associates in Pediatric Dentistry are holding a Book Drive to relieve school libraries affected by the flood. From June 1 – July 31, they are collecting gently used or new books at all four locations. Participants will be entered to win a family fun pack including gift cards and tickets to local restaurants and activities.
Weekly Activities for Baton Rouge Families
Tuesdays & Thursdays :: Mommy & Me Spanish Class at Java Mama designed for babies-5 year olds to explore the language through songs, puppets, and imaginative play. Tuition includes 8 classes in June plus supervised play at Java Mama until noon AND open play until 4:30pm! Children must be enrolled to participate. Fridays & Saturdays :: During Evening Sky Viewing at BREC’s Highland Road Park Observatory (HRPO), a professional-grade telescope at HRPO is unlocked to showcase the Baton Rouge sky in all its glory (weather permitting). This season, visitors should expect to see Uranus and Neptune!
Saturdays :: Red Stick Farmer’s Market, located in Downtown Baton Rouge, is an open-air, producer-only market, which ensures that all produce sold at the market is grown locally by each farmer. They have over 50 member farmers with a variety of locally grown products including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, seafood, artisan breads, homemade pies, honey, milk and cheese, native plants, herbs, and specialty food items.
Saturdays :: Enjoy singing, dancing, sharing stories, and puppets with Miss Trudy’s Traveling Trunk Show. This unique theater program gets young children on their toes for a celebration of the art and science of the seasons at the Louisiana Art & Science Museum.
