Slip-n-slides, portable sand boxes, small pools, roller coasters even the cozy coupe, big wheel or power wheels can begin to hold water if left out in the rain for a couple of days. It is critical that these toys be moved under the carport, in the garage or turned upside to drain once the rain stops.

Keep Up With Lawn Care

Aside from standing water, another easy tip to cut down on mosquito activity is to keep your lawn mowed, bushes trimmed and avoid piling up other landscaping debris. Mosquitoes love to nest down into tall grass, dense bushes and other debris piles during the hottest parts of the day. After the sun begins to set, these pests will jump into action. The more mosquitoes you are attracting into your yard to nest, the more that will become active around your property when they look to feed.

Beware Happy Hour

When you are outside with the sun is going down and the mosquitoes begin their activity all hope is not lost, there are still a few things you can do to minimize your risk of being dinner. Most breeds of mosquitoes primarily use their incredible sense of smell to guide them. The mosquito’s sense of smell has been said to be 100x strong than that of a dog. A human’s emission of C02 is what attracts them to us. Surprising to some, our C02 emissions increase when we are consuming alcohol. So if you’re going to be outside when mosquitoes are active, putting down that cold beer or glass of wine until you’re ready to go inside for the night can make you less of a target.

Consider Your Apparel

There are some less common species of mosquitoes that use their sight to guide them in addition to their incredible sense of smell. In these cases, wearing light colored clothing and not standing out against the environment around you can decrease your likelihood of being bitten. In addition, tightly woven fabrics can form a barrier that the mosquitoes cannot penetrate if they do land on you.
