How to Avoid Mosquito Bites This Summer in Baton Rouge

There is one thing that pesky mosquitoes need to thrive more than anything else, and that is water. With the summer rainy season and potential tropical activity in full effect, many of us are sloshing around in our yards hoping that everything will dry out with the otherwise scorching heat. Mosquito Shield of Baton Rouge has often shared these tips with our customers but it never hurts to reiterate them given the dangers that mosquitoes pose to our health.

Removal of Water

Removal of standing water is the most essential tactic in mosquito elimination. Anything that can potentially hold water can be a problem. A bottle cap holds enough water for mosquitoes to breed. Since mosquitoes breed in standing water, the elimination of this water decreases a mosquito’s breeding ground. Yards with features such as birdbaths, play sets with tire swings, tree houses, portable fireplaces and pits, catch basins and other large yard objects are the obvious culprits. We also encounter a lot of tarps in backyards that are collecting water. Many people use tarps to cover woodpiles, grills, or lawn equipment. Even the smallest creases in these tarps will collect enough water to create a problem. Looking out into my backyard where my 2 year old runs wild on a daily basis there are many other hidden risk where mosquitoes may be breeding. Slip-n-slides, portable sand boxes, small pools, roller coasters even the cozy coupe, big wheel or power wheels can begin to hold water if left out in the rain for a couple of days. It is critical that these toys be moved under the carport, in the garage or turned upside to drain once the rain stops.

Keep Up With Lawn Care

Aside from standing water, another easy tip to cut down on mosquito activity is to keep your lawn mowed, bushes trimmed and avoid piling up other landscaping debris. Mosquitoes love to nest down into tall grass, dense bushes and other debris piles during the hottest parts of the day. After the sun begins to set, these pests will jump into action. The more mosquitoes you are attracting into your yard to nest, the more that will become active around your property when they look to feed.

Beware Happy Hour

When you are outside with the sun is going down and the mosquitoes begin their activity all hope is not lost, there are still a few things you can do to minimize your risk of being dinner. Most breeds of mosquitoes primarily use their incredible sense of smell to guide them. The mosquito’s sense of smell has been said to be 100x strong than that of a dog. A human’s emission of C02 is what attracts them to us. Surprising to some, our C02 emissions increase when we are consuming alcohol. So if you’re going to be outside when mosquitoes are active, putting down that cold beer or glass of wine until you’re ready to go inside for the night can make you less of a target.

Consider Your Apparel

There are some less common species of mosquitoes that use their sight to guide them in addition to their incredible sense of smell. In these cases, wearing light colored clothing and not standing out against the environment around you can decrease your likelihood of being bitten. In addition, tightly woven fabrics can form a barrier that the mosquitoes cannot penetrate if they do land on you.

Treat Your Property

My wife and I started our franchise of Mosquito Shield here in the greater Baton Rouge area in large part to provide our children, and other families, a mosquito free yard to enjoy all spring, summer and fall. Following the tips for water removal listed above as well as keeping your yard maintained will without doubt help decrease your risk for breeding mosquitoes, but nothing compares to a trained technician coming to your house every two weeks to treat your property. If you are having continued issues with mosquitos we hope you will consider Mosquito Shield® a professionally applied mosquito spray that kills and repels mosquitoes and ticks. Our vector-trained technicians treat your common use areas such as pools, decks, patios, and swing sets. Our three-pronged approach kills mosquitoes, masks your CO2 (which attracts mosquitoes), and repels them away from your property.  The spray adheres to foliage, wood, stone/brick, and other organic materials. This creates a vertical barrier that strengthens with each visit.

  1. Good post. Very important points mentioned here. Mosquitoes are very dangerous and can take away life. The best way to prevent them is to keep the place clean and without stagnant water. Instead of repellents it is best to install window mosquito nets.
