Dear Disney, We Need to Talk
We recently took our kids to Disney World, and, well, I have some notes. To quote a favorite TV show, “first of all, how dare you?”
As a mom in her 40s with young kids (geriatric pregnancies amiright?), I’ve noticed some things about Disney World that the younger parents may not be as aware of.
Here is my open letter to Disney, let’s hope they can do better.
We stayed on property and while, sure it was convenient and it was nice to get dropped off right at the gates, the hotel room had some issues. Why, why do you have the lights so bright in the bathroom? Before this “vacation,” I knew I had a few gray hairs, but good grief, in that lighting my brown hair looked like the night sky at the Magic Kingdom fireworks show … so many “sparkles.” I didn’t need to know that. I had to give up my millennial side part and go with a middle part to hide some of that. And while we’re talking about the lighting, you know, I didn’t really need that lighted max zoom makeup mirror. Just saying.
The parks are so big and so spread out and sure they may have highlighted the inadequacies of my chosen footwear, they also highlighted another concerning factor … I’m definitely not made for rope drop to park closing any more. While my kids were riding in luxury or wanting to go from Tomorrowland to Frontierland for the 3rd time in one day, my hip and ankle were like, nah, not happening. Seriously, I wanted to feel like a kid again, but my joints were laughing at me and had me noticing the variety of half walls and benches to perch on to rest. Have you considered providing heating pads in each hotel room for the parents? Or maybe that needs to be added to my packing list like my sound machine and my own pillow.
The My Disney Experience app needs a coffee sort feature.
Seriously … why did it feel like finding a Joffrey’s location was a scavenger hunt? I can sort wait times and character popups and restaurants and that is great, but coffee is what I really need. We are sleep deprived parents and we need to fuel up every day (maybe twice or three times. Don’t judge us.) And no, I don’t want Starbucks, I’m at Disney World … Joffrey’s is where it’s at. If you don’t want to put it in an app, can we get a coffee adventure like the seek and find adventures in EPCOT? Can I get a stamp for each fun coffee I try and at the end I get a sticker or a reusable straw?
Speaking of, why have you not jumped on the reusable straw option? Seriously, people seem to hate paper straws and I’ve seen on the internet (so it must be true right?) that the glue in the straw may not be gluten free. I don’t mean the hard plastic Mickey shaped straws, I’m thinking silicone reusable straws with a case. They fold up and can be easily stored. I can envision so many options: Minnie, Red with white polka dots; Figment, purple and orange; Buzz Lightyear or Baymax: white with colored dots. Stitch. Lightsaber straws. Princess patterns. One with each emotion from the Inside Out films. I’d buy them; Maybe I should take on side work as a brand manager.
Anyway, just a few suggestions;
