Why I Still Meal Prep As a Work From Home Mom

Who said meal prepping had to be stressful … ok, well most working moms. However, the benefits of having a meal “microwave ready” helps the busy momma avoid a quick trip to Five Guys. Most of the time we only choose “trash food” because it is convenient. And what mom doesn’t want convenience? I assure you that if you find the appropriate meal prep system for you it will be just as convenient. This may look like setting a day aside to build your own meals or signing up with a company like Odom’s Kitchen or Hello Fresh. The added bonus is that you’re likely to actually save a few dollars … or at least break even while eating healthier.

Yes, I still meal prep though I work from home. This is because working from home sometimes looks like sitting in front of your computer with no breaks and skipping meals.  Working from home can be just as stressful, busy, hectic, unpredictable, and line-blurring as physically going into an office. Yes, I still make sure my family has a hot meal every day as well. Did I mention that I also meal prep for the kids to take to school daily? (the downside of having a Chef for a husband is your kids expect “Top Chef” meals at school too.)

So for my lunch, the prepped meals force me not to skip meals or eat popcorn for lunch.

I typically try to keep my meals at 400 calories or less and always include:

  • Lean protein 20%
  • Veggies 80%
  • *Sometimes I add a starch

One of my favorite go-to meals is:

  • Grilled Fish
  • Broccolini or Asparagus
  • If I add a starch, it may be couscous or the like

Your meals can look however you want them to. And if you don’t need or desire a healthy meal then just have your meals designed for convenience. But keep in mind that if you’re looking for a healthy diet then over half of the results are based on what you put IN your body! Remember that having a meal on hand to pop in the microwave makes it so much easier to skip the fast-food fries! Oh, and if you think I’m an expert at this … let me tell you this a year ago I would have NEVER written a blog about being healthy. So change can happen!

Happy Eating!

Dee Odom grew up in Jonesboro, LA. Dee earned a Bachelors from Grambling State University in Grambling, LA and a Masters from the rival school Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge, LA. However, the rivalry only lasts for one Saturday in November, the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Dee has a strong passion for public policy, social justice, and cooking. Therefore, it is no surprise that this self-proclaimed foodie met her husband, Chef Brandon while trying a new spot, and ultimately co-founded Odom’s Kitchen (eatwithodoms.com). Together Dee and Brandon have two amazing children. One of the things she loves most about being in Louisiana is providing her children with access to three living great-grandparents. Additionally, Dee and Brandon enjoy entertaining friends and family through food and laughs.

  1. Excellent article, you nailed it for me. I work from home and it’s difficult to get a meal ready daily. I wish Odum’s Kitchen was in Atlanta, excellent meal prep selection. I enjoyed the week of meal prep when you all did your pop up event here over a year ago.
    Please come back soon. ♥️
