Mini Mardi Gras Fashionistas

Mardi Gras parades – where fun and chaos reign supreme.

As a parent, you want your little ones to enjoy the revelry while staying safe and stylish. But let’s be real, the weather in Louisiana can be as unpredictable as a toddler’s mood swings. One minute it’s sunny, the next it’s pouring rain. And don’t even get me started on the parade debris – beads, cups, and who-knows-what-else can make for a messy and treacherous terrain.

So, what’s a parent to do? Dress your mini-me in something that’s equal parts comfortable, practical, and festive, of course!

Here are some tips for creating the perfect Mardi Gras parade outfit for your kiddo:

Safety: Our family’s Mardi Gras parade fashion strategy starts by getting tape/name tags to put on their backs and the bottom of one sock with my name, phone, and address. Just in case we get separated. This is my worst fear, but at least I can be found.

Footwear: Those cute little boots or sandals might look adorable, but trust me, they’re not parade-friendly. Mardi Gras parades are not the place for cute shoes unless you’re braver than me. Opt for comfortable sneakers or, like us, rain boots! I always put Jack and Jacob in their trusty rain boots, perfect for splashing through puddles (of water hopefully) and trudging through the messy parade route.

Layer it up: Dress your child in layers! It’s like playing a game of weather roulette. The weather varies from day to day and hour to hour. You never know when the sun will come out or a cold front will roll in. A breathable t-shirt, a lightweight sweater, and a waterproof jacket should do the trick.

Pockets and pouches: Beads, cups, and other parade treasures can add up quickly. Dress your child in something with pockets or consider adding a small pouch or backpack to their outfit. This will keep their hands free and their treasures safe between floats. Keep a large bag nearby, too.

Glitter and feathers: It’s Mardi Gras, after all! Add some sparkle and shine to your child’s outfit with glittery accessories, sequined clothing, or even facial glitter. Add glitter, beads, and feathers to everything.

Keep a change of clothes in a ziplock bag for potential accidents of any nature.

Some of our favorite Mardi Gras parade outfits for kids include:

  • A brightly colored t-shirt with a pair of comfortable sweats and rainboots
  • A sparkly face sticker paired with a matching t-shirt and jeans
  • A miniature version of a Mardi Gras king or queen costume, complete with a tiny crown and scepter

With Jack and Jacob’s rain boots and their layers, we’re ready to take on whatever the Mardi Gras parade throws our way!
