Valentine’s Day is almost here, and there is some counting down going on over here. I am not so much on receiving Valentine’s Day gifts: flowers, chocolates, and cards. Don’t get me wrong here. I do love my chocolate and flowers, but Valentine’s Day is so much fun when celebrating it with my kids. This Valentine’s Day Foaming Hearts Activity is the perfect addition to our Valentine’s Day festivities.
I try to make a day out of this holiday. Yes, I am cheesy with pink heart-shaped pancakes for breakfast and all.
All About Those Hearts
Valentine’s Day cannot be celebrated without some sort of heart shape included. This activity is one that shouldn’t be ignored. It only takes 3 simple ingredients and a heart shaped cookie cutter, easy peasy! Plus, you can prep for this activity beforehand.
Items Needed:
- 1 small box of Baking Soda
- 1/4 cup of Water
- White Vinegar
- Pink Food Coloring (10-12 drops)
- Heart Shaped Cookie Cutter
Directions:
First, pour the entire box of baking soda into a bowl. Add the food coloring to your water and then pour it into the bowl with the baking soda. This will make the baking soda pasty and easier to work with. You want to be able to mold it into the cookie cutter shape. If you find that it seems too soft and won’t hold shape, just add a little more baking soda and vice versa with the water if it isn’t holding shape well. Once you have your heart shaped baking sodas, place them in the freezer for at least 30 minutes. This step can be done a head of time: even the day before! Leave the hearts in the freezer until you are ready to use them.
Experiment Time!
Ok, now for the real fun! Take out a deep tupperware or pan for this next step. The kids will be pouring vinegar over the hearts, so will get a little messy. Place the frozen hearts into the dish with a small cup of vinegar (I say small because you know they are going to want to pour the entire thing out as soon as they sit down). Have your child pour the vinegar over the heart and watch as the baking soda and vinegar react: pink foaming hearts y’all!
**The thinner the hearts, the quicker they will dissolve = less vinegar needed. Remember this if you make thicker hearts. It will take a tad bit more vinegar.
My kids had a blast doing this activity, and I hope yours do as well!
