Some restaurants are trendy for a season, while others quietly become institutions. French Market Bistro falls into the second category.

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary, planning a much-needed date night, gathering with friends, or simply looking for an exceptional meal, French Market Bistro has been one of Baton Rouge’s favorite dining destinations for nearly three decades.

Opened in 1996 by Chef Timothy Kringlie and Justin McDonald, French Market Bistro combines Louisiana flavors with French influence in a warm, inviting atmosphere. From the attentive service to the thoughtfully crafted menu, it’s the kind of place that feels special without feeling overly formal.

If you’re visiting for the first time, I highly recommend starting with the Cream of Brie and Crabmeat Soup. It’s rich, creamy, and full of flavor — one of those dishes that keeps you thinking about it long after you’ve finished the last spoonful.

I almost always pair it with the house salad, and together they’re my perfect lunch. But honestly, you really can’t make a bad choice here. From fresh seafood and perfectly prepared steaks to seasonal specials and decadent desserts, the menu offers something for everyone — even my children can’t get enough of their pizza.

One thing that has always stood out to me is the consistency. In a city filled with incredible local restaurants, French Market Bistro has continued to earn its reputation year after year through exceptional food, genuine hospitality, and an experience that never feels rushed. It’s one of the reasons we continue coming back.

Some of our favorite memories have been made around a table at French Market Bistro.

It’s where we’ve celebrated milestones, enjoyed unhurried conversations, and marked special occasions that we’ll always remember.

If you’re looking for a Baton Rouge restaurant to celebrate an anniversary, birthday, graduation, promotion, retirement, or simply gather with the people you love over an exceptional meal, French Market Bistro will always be one of my first recommendations. Some restaurants come and go, but after 30 years, French Market Bistro has proven it’s much more than a place to eat — it’s a place to celebrate.
