Weirdly, because Lent had just started and many parishioners looked the way I felt: tired, frustrated, humbled, and/or ruing the resolution to give up or take up . Still, there was a palpable joy in the sanctuary of our Church. We had gathered, as a family, sharing a creed and a language and a ritual as familiar as the walls that held our worship. Lent can be a period of self-inflicted hardship, but we find comfort in the mere fact of gathering there together and holding one another up.

This gives us a chance to celebrate who we are, study those that came before us, and investigate historical patterns. We learn about historical events that shaped the world and those that are hidden. We learn about leaders and their sacrifices.
Carter G. Woodson was devoted to showcasing the contributions of Black Americans. In 1926, he launched Negro History Week on the second week of February to coincide with the birthdays of Abraham Lincoln (12th) and Frederick Douglass (14th).
