Sunday Driving

Family adventures don’t require airfare. Just a tank of gas and an open afternoon are all you need to experience new things with your family. It is not unusual for all four of us (husband, daughter, son and I) to get into our car on a Sunday afternoon, get to the end of our street, sit and ask the age old question: right or left? What started out as a way to just get out of the house and allow our kids to have a change in scenery (bonus points if they happened to take a nap) has become a way for us to find new adventures within driving distance from our house. We might end up in False River,...
A few weeks ago, I was listening to a nationally syndicated country morning show after I dropped the kids off at daycare. They were interviewing an artist, asking him what his road trip necessities were. Listening to their conversation got me thinking. Thinking about family vacations when I was a kid brought out loads of nostalgia. When I was a kid, our summer vacations were always camping trips. We camped a lot in East Texas and those trips are remembered fondly by me and my siblings. Traveling to our destination was half the fun. Our trips included paper maps (gasp!), sandwiches and snacks (see fudge rounds, sunflower seeds and chips) put together by my mom and music picks by my dad....
"Take a deep breath in for four counts, hold it for seven, and exhale for eight." I tried to find my zen in yoga class while also doing the fastest seven-count ever. I admit that I'm pretty bad at relaxing. The entire time I'm supposed to shake off the day, I'm typically running through the events of tomorrow. Still, mentally managing all the curricular and extra-curricular activities of my four kids and busy husband does give this control-freak an odd sense of calm. When our instructor suggests that the class find its happy place, many picture the beach. Toes digging into the sand, the sound of waves gently and consistently ebbing, and the sun like a blanket on the skin...
Disclosure :: this post is sponsored by Coastal Mississippi; however, all opinions are my own as we had a great experience and lots of fun on our trip. Why Your Family Should Visit Coastal Mississippi for a Weekend Getaway Having lived in Southeast Louisiana my entire life, many memories were made on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi ... from camping at Buccaneer State Park and going to the wave pool as a child to attending the many shows and concerts at the local casinos as an adult. So when the opportunity arose for us to take a weekend trip to the coast, I couldn't wait to relive some of those memories as well as create new ones with my own family. When I...
Here you are, packed and ready for a family trip to Disney. Fast passes are arranged, dining is reserved, you’ve prepped snacks with care. You arrive to the parks with hope and excitement then ... the clouds gather and it starts to RAIN. Panic sets in as you frantically search for the dollar store ponchos EVERY Disney blogger told you to pack. And because you were ready to be fully prepared for any scenario, you packed them. Wishfully thinking, no doubt, that there would be no reason for them. Girl. Of COURSE, you were going to need them. Rain in that part of Florida is a part of the forecast for at least 2 minutes EVERY day. And if you’re lucky,...
