Another Year Logged for this Menopause Mom!
As America celebrates her 250th birthday, I’m also celebrating my own summer birthday. Also, like America, I’m an older mom, like menopause mom. I’ve been reflecting on this as I blow out the candles. The change is here, and what a change it is!
It’s interesting to be “that mom” at school gatherings. You know, the one who has to wear readers to see to pluck that chin hair or the one whose brain fog means she has no idea why she walked into the room. And then the room she’s walked into is full of younger moms who are all put together, stylish and cute. Yeah, that’s reality for me, and I’m working on embracing it. I will not dwell on the fact that an urgent care nurse once asked whether I was the mom or grandma.

I became that mom because I simply wasn’t ready to be a mom when I was younger, and then when I was ready, it just didn’t happen. So, we adopted our boys, and my adoption “pregnancies” were similar to elephant gestation – both took two years!
Now, here we are, two mid-lifers with a pre-teen and a teen. The good news is that research shows that having kids later in life keeps you active and healthy longer. I guess that means we’ll still be kicking along by the time grandchildren are in the picture. Please, God, don’t let that be anywhere in our near future!
Hey, families come in all shapes and sizes, and yes, ages.

I know you’re out there, fellow mature moms, and I see you, sweating in the carpool line…in December…with the air conditioner on full blast. We bring a unique perspective to parenting, and just because we need a fan blowing full blast on our face to apply makeup doesn’t mean we don’t have something to offer our kids. They need our love and support regardless of how “hip” we are to current events. Tap into that wisdom that comes from surviving the ups and downs of life and throw everything you’ve got into your kids. Hopefully, all they’ll remember is our fierce devotion and not the fact that our knees pop as we go up the stairs!
Keep on keeping on, ladies. We’ve got this!
