Happy Halloween :: Our Family’s Spook-tacular Celebration
Halloween in our household is a whirlwind of excitement, anxiety, and Pokémon-themed everything! My tiny Pokémon trainers, Jack and Jacob, are bursting with anticipation. This year, we’re going full-on Pokémon – costumes, pumpkins, and all. I hope you can find us.
I’m a nervous wreck, though. Jacob’s convinced his wings will actually make him fly. He said he can’t wait to wear his costume (bathroom-friendly) to school and fly off after recess. Jacob thinks there’s a remote control that will turn on the wings we made from foam and duct tape. I’m scared to be optimistic that he will wear a costume on Halloween. Jack’s costume had to be on theme for BIG kids because you know he’s 8.
Jacob’s Halloween enthusiasm has limitations. As soon as the sun dips, he’s done. “My eyes know the scary things aren’t real,” he says, “but my mind forgets.” We reassure him, “One day, Jacob, you’ll conquer Halloween night!” I know he’s not the only kid who is weary about Halloween. He’s already asked his big brother to get enough candy for both of them.
Jack, on the other hand, lives for costumes and Halloween history. He’s always dressed up, rocking a different getup every week. Our literary pumpkins for the library are his pride and joy – this year, they’re Pokémon-themed, naturally.
Trick-or-treating is an adventure.
Jack will burst out the door, Poké Ball Halloween bucket at the ready. Jacob has plans to relax on the couch. Our neighbors leave out candy and prizes (one of our neighbors is a dentist) so we always have a decent amount of stuff.
Despite Jacob’s nighttime jitters, our Halloween celebrations are filled with laughter and love. We’ll keep decorating, costuming, and coaxing Jacob until he’s ready to join the nighttime fun.
For now, we’ll enjoy the pumpkin-painting chaos, cooking decorating, and quality time together, Pokémon-style! Who knows, maybe we’ll have a haunted house again (I ran out of white sheets so one of us was a plaid ghost), courtesy of Jack’s creativity and Jacob’s growing bravery.
Until then, I’ll be the anxious Pokémon mom, ensuring Jacob’s wings remain firmly attached to his costume.
Happy Halloween from our Pokémon crew!
