Summer Movie Nights :: The Memories We Make Between the Credits

There’s something about summer nights. The days are longer, the schedule is a little more relaxed, and there’s finally time to slow down and enjoy the little things.

Some of my favorite summer memories aren’t big vacations or expensive outings. They’re the simple nights at home, popping popcorn, grabbing blankets, and sitting together watching a movie as a family.

As my daughter has gotten older, our movie choices have changed. We’ve gone from the little kid movies we watched on repeat to movies that make us laugh, bring back memories, or even start a good conversation afterward.

Finding a movie that everyone actually wants to watch is sometimes a challenge, but these are some that have become family favorites.

The Parent Trap will always be a summer classic. Between summer camp, adventures, and the dream of having a twin you never knew about, it has everything that makes a fun family movie night.

The Sandlot is another one that captures that carefree feeling of childhood summers. It’s about friendship, adventures, and those long summer days when kids made their own fun.

Lilo & Stitch is one of those movies that is funny, sweet, and has a message that sticks with you. It’s about family, finding your place, and loving people exactly as they are.

For older kids and teens, The Goonies is a fun adventure movie that makes you want to grab a flashlight and go searching for hidden treasure. It’s the kind of movie that reminds you how fun it was to be a kid with a big imagination.

The Greatest Showman is one we can’t watch without singing along. The music, the message, and the reminder that everyone has something special to offer make it a favorite in our house.

Of course, you can’t go wrong with Disney favorites like Finding Nemo, Moana, Inside Out, and Luca. They’re entertaining for kids but usually sneak in a message that parents appreciate too.

One thing I’ve learned is that it’s not always about the movie itself. Sometimes it’s about making the night feel special. We might make a big bowl of popcorn, grab some candy, build a pile of blankets on the couch, or even watch a movie outside if the weather is nice. Those are the moments kids remember.

Summer seems to go faster every year. One minute you’re celebrating the last day of school, and the next you’re buying school supplies and getting back into a routine. I’m trying to soak up these slower days because I know they won’t always look the same.

My daughter is getting older, and I know there will come a time when she’s too busy with friends, activities, and her own plans to want to sit beside me for a movie night. So for now, I’m holding onto the popcorn, the laughter, and even the movies we’ve already watched a hundred times.

Because when it comes down to it, it’s not really about what’s playing on the screen. It’s about who’s sitting beside you.

And those are the memories that last long after the credits roll.
