Trick Or Treat Apple Game
It is that time of the year and the costumes are in the store. The candy is on sale and the decorations are falling over on the isle. I know that most places do not get excited for some holidays, but in the south, Halloween is one of the most celebrated holidays. From Trunk or Treat, haunted houses, and costume parties to neighborhoods ready to pass out candy to trick or treaters.
For me, I love celebrating Christmas and New Years, but my son gets so excited each year to dress up like one his favorite characters and go to his Momo’s house where all the grandkids can trick or treat together. The adults dress up in costumes, play spooky music, set up games, cook food and I make the sweet treats. Everyone’s favorite thing that I make is Flavored Candy Apples.
Yes, Flavored Colored Candy Apples. I have lemon, strawberry, cotton candy, pineapple, watermelon, grape – any flavor you request. I do them for occasions but for Halloween, I make them for a game (and for the kids to enjoy). The game is called TRICK OR TREAT. The rules are simple, the apples all look the same, and you must pick the apple with good flavor instead of licorice flavored apples. I color them the same way and sometimes decorate them with Halloween monsters to disguise the fact that they have some disgusting apples. And believe me, I really make them disgusting to taste.
This game is one of the top games that we play for Halloween!
It gives the kids something to look forward to each year. This year I will let the kids pick the theme and all the flavors, so they can be a part of tricking each other. If you would like to make candy apples, here is the recipe ::
Trick or Treat Apple Ingredients ::
15 granny smith apples
15 popsicle sticks or wicked sticks
2 cups of sugar
1 ½ cups water
1 cup of corn syrup
4 drops of whatever gel color
2 drops of White gel Color
2 drops of flavor of choice
And 3-4 drops for licorice flavoring for the disgusting apples.
You will also need ::
A Candy Thermometer to cook the candy until 325 degrees
Cookie Sheet
Parchment paper
How to clean and wash the apples ::
- Put some water into a large cooking pot to heat on the stove for 15minutes, then drop the apples into the pot while boiling until the wax is completely off. If you are using granny apples, remove them when you see yellow color.
- Then take them out of the boiling water, set on a pan lined with paper towels until the apples dry. I like to let them sit overnight to completely dry.
Now To Make the Candy Apples ::
- In a large saucepan, combine sugar, corn syrup, water and food coloring. If any sugar granules end up on the inside of the pan, use a wet pastry brush to clean them down. Set the mixture over medium to high heat and bring to a boil. Insert a candy thermometer into the liquid to allow it to boil, without stirring, until it reaches 302°F (hard crack stage), about 20 minutes. Remove from heat.
- Add flavor and stir slightly. Working with 1 at a time, dip the apples into the mixture, tilting the pan to coat them evenly. Let the excess drip off into the pan, then set the coated apples on a baking sheet line with parchment paper. Allow to dry for 30 minutes.
- Decorate as Desired
Store in dry cool area, do not place in refrigerator, the candy will melt.
