Black History Month in Baton Rouge: A Celebration of Culture and Community
We’re excited to share with you some awesome ways to celebrate Black History Month in our vibrant city.
One of the most striking examples of Black history in Baton Rouge can be found in the city’s vibrant street art scene. The “Black History Graffiti” murals, located in the North Boulevard area, are a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving and celebrating its African American heritage. The murals, created by local artists, depict iconic figures such as Martin Luther King Jr., Harriet Tubman, and Malcolm X, as well as scenes from African American history and culture.
In addition to the murals, Baton Rouge is home to a number of museums and cultural centers dedicated to preserving and celebrating Black history. The African American Museum and Cultural Center of Louisiana, located in the historic Scotlandville neighborhood, features exhibits on African American art, history, and culture. The museum also offers a range of educational programs and events throughout the year.
Other notable attractions include the Baton Rouge Civil Rights Trail, which takes visitors on a self-guided tour of historic sites related to the Civil Rights Movement, and the Louisiana State University’s African and African American Studies program, which offers a range of courses and events focused on African American history and culture.
Throughout the month of February, Baton Rouge will be hosting a range of events and activities to celebrate Black History Month. From lectures and exhibitions to concerts and festivals, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.
