25 Adventures Every Louisiana Kid Should Have

25 Adventures Every Louisiana Kid Should Have

If childhood had a smell in Louisiana, it would probably be a mixture of sunscreen, bug spray, muddy sneakers, and a suspicious amount of melted snowball syrup.

As parents, we spend a lot of time worrying about screen time, bedtimes, and whether the mysterious stain on the couch is washable. But when our kids look back on childhood years from now, they probably won’t remember any of that.

They’ll remember the alligator they thought was a dinosaur.

They’ll remember getting soaked at a splash pad.

They’ll remember climbing on giant playgrounds, riding trains, exploring swamps, finding fossils, and getting so muddy they had to ride home sitting on a towel.

Louisiana is packed with adventures that kids talk about for years. Some are famous. Some are hidden gems tucked down country roads that even lifelong locals haven’t discovered yet. Some are just a short drive from Louisiana.

So before they hit those teenage years and suddenly become too cool to hang out with us, here are 25 adventures every Louisiana kid should experience before turning 12.

The truth is that kids don’t need expensive vacations to make unforgettable memories.

They need adventures. They need mud puddles, wildlife sightings, giant playgrounds, surprise road trips, and stories they’ll still be telling when they’re grown.

Years from now, they probably won’t remember which video game they played on a random Tuesday.

But they’ll remember the day they spotted an alligator in a swamp, climbed a pirate ship playground, found a fossil, rode a ferry, got covered in mud, and came home exhausted and happy.

That’s the good stuff. That’s childhood.

Melanie McHenry
Hi, I’m Melanie McHenry and the best thing I will ever do in my life is be the mom of Jack and Jacob. I don’t have all the answers, but I’m learning and trying to be better every single day. Thankfully, I have an incredible support system made up of my parents and friends who cheer me on and pick me up when I trip over life’s little surprises. I love adventures and I’m proud to say I have jumped out of a plane, traveled to Morocco, and collected plenty of stories along the way. When I’m not chasing experiences, I enjoy painting, writing, and volunteering whenever I get the chance. I even try to make it to the gym, though my abs would argue otherwise. I also have a few degrees (including my doctorate) from a few universities. My favorite colors change depending on the day (except orange that I hate), but one thing that never changes is my belief that everything should be celebrated with cake, including half birthdays. I love God and I thank Him every day for the many blessings in my life, especially the two little ones who call me Mom.
