My girls are excited to be the topic of conversation for us all today. And by my girls, I mean my quite beautiful (if I do say so myself) backyard hens. Last spring, I decided that I wanted to get chickens. I spend a lot of time in our vegetable garden during the spring/summer/fall months so I thought the girls would be a nice addition for both enjoyment and for purpose. As with gardening, I love the thought of our son getting to experience first hand where our food comes from. He was only 11 months when we got our chicks but now at 18 months, 'chicken', 'egg' and 'bawk bawk' are among the other words he's learning. And...

Dining Out With Baby

My husband and I have always loved eating out and figured that wouldn't change after we became parents, but I still remember when relatives came over to visit when Jack was a newborn and suggested we go to dinner. I was hesitant--dinnertime was his fussiest time of the day--but my mother in law reassured me that we would take turns holding him and it would be fine. We went out to Chimes and yes, he did cry a little bit in public but it wasn't the end of the world. In fact, we had a great time! It was nice to feel a little bit like our old selves again even if things were now totally different. With that...
At the age of six, Pamela and her sister spent cold nights sleeping in the back of a U-Haul with no blankets. They didn’t know when they would eat. One night, Pamela’s mother awoke the girls suddenly and yelled at them to hide under a car in the parking lot. When a police officer pulled Pamela from her hiding place, she watched as her parents were arrested. She remembers watching as the police car left and her mother “faded away.” This is how Pamela became a foster child. Fortunately, a CASA volunteer was assigned to be a voice for Pamela. “When you’re a child, no one listens to you, especially in the foster care system.” Pamela describes her CASA volunteer...

This year, February 14  is a big day in our household. We don't typically celebrate Valentine's Day, but this year we already have plans. It's opening day at Alex Box for the 2014 LSU Baseball season. We are season ticket holders and have been for the last three years. We are taking a cue from some friends, who are also season ticket holders, and making opening night a date night. Many other games will be enjoyed by the four of us as a family, but opening night it will just be the two of us and a few thousand other Tiger fans. We have brought our kids to countless football and baseball games, but in my opinion, baseball games are the...
