It's no secret to anyone that knows me, I love a good deal! Spend the night at a new Chick fil a for a year of free chicken? Done! Stand in line at a new Zaxby's for a year of freebies? Done! Scan the barcode for a $10 off coupon? Done! So seven years ago, my husband and I had been married for four years. We were working our tails off to be rid of debt. One day my sister-in-law came to work talking about making her own laundry detergent and how awesome it was and how little it cost her. Immediately I was intrigued, but I felt intimidated to try on my own. A few months passed, I...

I Love Our Ordinary

Lately, I have been reflecting on how thankful I am for our everyday life. To some, you may think we lack adventure – there has never been a post on my social media about a family hiking trip or a get up and go random trip. This may be coming off of the passing holidays and all the lists of the “Top 10 things to do with your family over Christmas” or “2019 Things we MUST DO.” For me, though, I love our ordinary. Our life is fun, fulfilling and ordinary. We enjoy our time with each other playing games, eating around the table, or watching a good show on TV. I recently asked my 13 year old son what...
All my life I have enjoyed the gift giving aspect of holidays. I love that you can share your time and thoughts with a loved one through the celebration of a gift exchange. I might have even put just a little too much heart into it as I was a teenager. I can remember getting my feelings hurt when friends didn’t put quite the same amount of effort into gift giving as I did. As I grew older, gifts themselves became less and less of a meaningful thing, and I began to understand that it was really the thought behind them that really triggered all my warm fuzzy feelings. Less became more and quality became MUCH more important than quantity. Then I...
‘Tis the season for matching smocks, Red and green plaid and knee high socks. As Southern mothers, our duty calls  To dress our kids like toy soldiers and dolls.   Christmas cards are delivered each day And loved ones are put out on display. Their angelic faces are all aglow Beneath bible verses and giant bows.   Our Christmas card photo looks very sweet. Don’t let us fool you, our smiles hold deceit. Our photo session took us at least 50 tries Because of runaways, slouching, and rolling eyes.   Thanks to my husband all the lights have been strung. The last of the garland has finally been hung. When he came inside he was dripping sweat, His face was red, and he was soaking wet.   Today it’s almost eighty degrees. Just last week there was a winter freeze.  We...
I’ve always struggled with asking for help and even more so with accepting help. As soon as I hear “Do you need help with …” or “Do you want me to …” my mouth starts forming the word “no.” I think the first time I realized how much I struggled with asking for and accepting help was with the birth of my first child. At that time, help came from every direction - cooked meals, errands, laundry, babysitting to allow for a shower. And while I was gracious for my family and friends to offer, my instinct was to say “no.” I think that quick “no” came from guilt. Guilt that I wouldn’t be able to return the favor. Guilt that someone...
