What the Kids are Watching

As a teacher, our summers still stay pretty busy, but one huge positive is the amount of time we get to spend with our kids. But when you’re in South Louisiana in the summer, that’s a lot of time inside. Between the blazing heat, daily afternoon rain and me trying catch up on laundry or ________ (insert any other task but it’s ALWAYS laundry) television becomes the babysitter. We love television in our house, and I try to still somewhat engage with my children when they’re watching their shows. I can spend time with them while folding or cleaning the kitchen while simultaneously keeping an eye on what they’re watching. With my kids varying so much in age, their...
Imagine this ... a dimly lit room, dozens of free movies to watch (and even more TV show options), two full meals delivered to you, and not a single child climbing on you. Sounds like Heaven, right? I got to experience that Heaven this past May on a 17 hour flight to Brisbane, Australia. It was glorious! While others might complain about being stuck in a metal tube for 2/3 of a day, I embraced it and enjoyed every minute of it! I caught up on all the new releases I didn't have time to watch (namely, Black Panther), and I didn't cook a single meal! Best of all, no one was demanding my attention, climbing on me, or yelling...

The Good Kind of Stranger

Over the years, my husband and I have made a habit of coming home from solo errands with the kids and swapping stories about strangers that we spoke to while we were out. Multiple times a week, we meet someone who wants to talk to us about our children. Sometimes it’s because they’re reminded of their own children, grandchildren, nieces, or nephews who are the same ages or look similar to our boys. Other times, they’re remembering, both fondly and fearfully, this chaotic stage of life. They’re not nearly as horrified about the epic tantrum in the cereal aisle. Instead, they’re telling me that I’ll long for the crazy one day. I know we live in a time of...
It's a new school year, and I feel like I'm on the edge of new territory. We have a 6 year old and a 6th grader, and I can't even wrap my mind around it. Our 6th grader is taller than me, right on the verge of becoming a teenager.  Recently I saw a wall of brochures advertising different types of groups to join, and one of the groups was a "Middle School Moms Support Group." Although I laughed when I saw it, now I wonder if there is one in our area. This isn't about my son; he is truly wonderful. It's just that the middle school years are full of so many incredible changes. I want him to remember...
I lead a double life. I am the sister to twins, the wife of a twin, and now mother of twins. Things have come in twos all my life. I like to think that being a sister of twins and then marrying one prepared me for the role of raising twins. I’m not sure anything can really prepare you though. It’s double the trouble and twice the diapers. Double the tears and twice the tantrums. It’s double the good, the bad, and the ugly. Thankfully, I have a mom and mother-in-law to compare notes to. Their experience and perspectives from raising twins have been helpful for advice, a shoulder to cry on, or just an encouraging word or two. So yes, sometimes it’s double...
