The Day We Became Three

The last seven weeks have been the most transformative of my life. My husband and I welcomed our first child, our son William Webster, on January 9, 2014 at 11:10 am. We checked into the hospital at about 3 a.m. that day to be induced. A few days earlier, the doctor had performed an ultrasound (our first since week 20) and we found out that he was smaller than he should be. That combined with my slightly elevated blood pressure convinced her to schedule my delivery for three days later, at 39 weeks. She assured us that he appeared to be doing just fine, but of course we were worried. We were also completely taken off guard that we were...
We are back this month with another Heart & Home! To view previous posts in this series, click here.   I think as moms we all have a deep desire to create a warm and happy home for our families to grow in.  We want the space to be uplifting, beautiful, and remind us of who we are.  Wife, mother-of-four, and artist, Courtney Richard, has done this in every corner of her Baton Rouge home.  Each picture of this home will have you gazing and taking in every detail, amazed at all there is to see. Courtney has an undeniable talent for art and design, but even more heart and passion as a mom.  She is a mom who knows how...
This has been a topic of much debate in my house recently. I am burning up with baby fever despite the fact that 18-month-old Jack still keeps me very much on my toes. I remember the first time that someone with a child about the same age as ours announced a new pregnancy, I was filled with panic on her behalf. No WAY could I imagine adding a new baby to the mix already. But my own mom had my sister when I was only 13 months old and somehow we all survived. Lately, I've been thinking that maybe a new baby wouldn't be so terrifying after all. Assuming that you're able to make the decision intentionally and not...
Raising teenagers is hard. It always has been, and I’m afraid it always will be. With each generation comes its’ own set of issues. It’s crazy how far we’ve come in the last 20 years as far as technology alone is concerned. When I was in middle and high school, there were no cell phones, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc. Heck, most people didn’t even have internet in their homes until I was in college. It’s a new day, folks. It can be scary thinking about raising preteens and teenagers in the digital age, where it seems like everyone has access to your sweet baby. Believe me, we’re totally there at the Lawrence house. The thought of people I don’t know...

Why Can’t Kids Talk?

This is not a post about developmental milestones and language development. That will come in due time. Don't you worry. This is about (use your best granny voice) "Why can't kids these days have a conversation?" Conversation and communication are becoming obsolete. It all starts around ages 10-12. There are many reasons as to why this is the case and for many years these reasons have proven true (i.e. puberty, preteen rebellion, etc), but over the last 5 years something else entirely has changed the way kids communicate. The culprit is the PHONE. I'm sure Alexander Graham Bell never expected the telephone, of all things, to decrease and potentially eliminate communication. Texting has taken over this world. I love texting as much as the...
