Actively Parenting

In our little family, fitness and being active is a non-negotiable. Throughout middle, high school, and even college I've dabbled in softball, track and field, basketball and my personal favorite, competitive dance. I couldn't wait for my son to turn three (!!!) so I could watch him run up, down, and around the soccer field. In his six years, he's played soccer, basketball, and baseball and I didn't want to just be a bystander. With him being an only child, he needs someone to practice dribbling and passing with. If my husband and I didn't make working out a priority, we wouldn't be able to do it. In high school, we started dance practice with running two miles. In college,...

Every January, my counseling practice experiences an increase in new clients and appointments. I’ve jokingly come to refer to January as “Holiday Rehab.” Of course, many people do choose January to start therapy as a function of their new resolutions. But equally compelling are the number of people who come with the goal of improving family relationships triggered by holiday tension and stressful holiday interactions. So I’ve compiled some of my best advice that can be applied AHEAD of the holiday to hopefully improve the holiday experience and preserve a little bit of your sanity. Manage Your Expectations If I could pick one thing that I think causes the most disappointment and stress, it would be expectations. Now I don’t mean that...
I'm sitting down to type this - and the fact that as I do so my keyboard is getting shinier from my Sour Cream and Onion Lays chip-coated fingers doesn't faze me. Nope, those chips are not baked. They're greasy and they taste just like Procrastination. I'm feeling procrastinate-ey. I'm going to open up another bag right now (they're individually sized). AND IF THEY WEREN'T? You'd nod your head in solidarity, Sister. Over the last several weeks, I've been joking about how I'm handling the most public of my issues, our post-flood life. That's sort-of how I tend to handle things - jokes. Inappropriate jokes, mostly. Uncomfortable and inappropriate. Sometimes it doesn't require much imagination because the maybe-I-shouldn't-say-that stuff is really...
I have come to the conclusion after lots of scientific research (read: talking to my husband and his friends) that men are not like women. This is a shocking revelation. With that being said, men apparently don't love being called skinny. If I ever tell my husband that he's starting to look slender, he drops and gives me fifty and my son is starting to follow suit. My son is a little guy. He always has been. He's been long and lean since he outgrew that itty-bitty baby chub and became a walking toddler. Now that's he's six years old, of course he's a lot more vocal and so are others. It's always bothered me whenever someone would say something...
