Three Shows to Watch with Your Preteen

As a mom of a twelve year old, I feel like we are somewhere in between kid shows & adult shows. We are always looking for fun shows that we will both enjoy that aren’t “kid shows.” There are a few shows we are watching currently or just finished that I think are the perfect in between shows.

Gilmore Girls.

Streaming on Netflix. As a mom born in the 80s, I’m no stranger to Gilmore Girls and watching it with my daughter has grown my love for this show! If you haven’t watched Gilmore Girls yet, it’s a witty show about a small town. You will laugh and maybe shed a few tears as you watch the characters learn, grow and develop over the series. The mother/daughter relationships make for some great conversations between us. Seeing Rory grow and change helps us talk about the changes my daughter is experiencing currently in middle school.

Switched At Birth.

Streaming on Hulu. Originally debuted in 2011 on CW, this show is a drama set in Kansas City about two families. As the title gives away, two babies were switched at birth and their families learn this when the girls are teens. This show follows their families & adventures through high school & some of college. Switched at Birth gave us the PERFECT show to binge during spring break recently. Bonus: one of the characters is deaf and it’s influenced my daughter to want to learn ASL.

Glee.

Streaming on Hulu. Full disclosure, I’m a musical theatre fan & loved my choir days in high school. However, even if you aren’t a musical fan, I think this show gives us all something to enjoy! This show gives us a glimpse into an high school Glee Club and all that happens in their corner of the world. I love seeing a group of kids who struggle to fit in other places in high school find their happiness within the walls of Glee club. Also, this show gives us and our children great examples of how to be accepting and loving humans to everyone around us. Lessons on accepting each others differences make us a all better humans.

What would you add to this list? We are always looking for shows to watch together as a family. There is something special about curling up under a blanket on the couch, relaxing and being taken away into a different world.

Tiffany
Tiffany is happily married to her high school sweetheart, Desmond. Together they get to play the roles of Mommy and Daddy to Micah, a gifted Math Wiz of a teenager who is always making people laugh, and Keilyn, a spunky, flower loving, dancing girl who will stop and talk to anyone she meets. She was born and raised in Baton Rouge and has Cajun blood running through her veins. She works full time outside of the home in business administration. She started the journey of motherhood young but wouldn’t have it any other way. Her children have taught her to laugh, play and that sometimes it’s ok not to have a plan! She has a passion for teenagers and is an active mentor in her church’s youth group. In her rare free time she enjoys shopping, coffee, and date nights with her husband. She believes that everyone has a story to tell and enjoys meeting new people, making people laugh, and spending time with friends and family.
