My 5-year-old has had a hard 2022-2023 school year. He was also diagnosed with ADHD, so this year has a challenge not only for him but for me. We even enrolled him in tutoring 3-days / week with extra days during holiday weeks. Between tutoring, homework, extra studying and his extracurriculars, we were pushed to the limit. "I know, baby, mom is tired too." He obtained great grades in science and social studies. He brought his grade significantly up in math, but he failed in English. We were told by his school that he would not be going on the 1st grade. The awards recognition program is in about two weeks, and I just want to curl up into my bed and...
We are excited to announce that the winner of our 2023 Red Stick Mom Teacher of the Year is :: Sydney Brignac – Juban Parc Elementary and Livingston Parish {Nominated by :: Carlee Hurley, Paul Brignac, Ashley Manno & Melanie Scott} Sydney is a special education elementary school teacher for Juban Parc Elementary. The kids she inherited were struggling from frequent teacher turnover. Sydney always goes above and beyond for her kids. Her kids have made massive strides in their behavior and education. Her job doesn’t end when she gets home either. She spends her evenings planning and figuring out the best way to maximize her kids’ education. Her kids have shattered expectations and have achieved goals that were believed to be impossible...
Family Day at My Son's Fraternity House When the invitation to spend family day at my son’s fraternity house arrived, all I could envision was a bunch of college boys trying to make “Animal House” look presentable. Was that even possible? I sure hope so. After all, this place is running mostly on parental donations and dues. Surely, they will want us to approve of the investment, right? We walked up to the tables and tents nicely set up around the front lawn. There were parents eagerly looking for their sons and boys, sleepily and not nearly as excited (it was before noon, mind you) looking for their parents. I was impressed that most of the boys looked clean and put...
I am a mother of three boys under the age of six. My 4-year-old twins were born early at 30.1 weeks and had to be in the NICU for over three months with one twin coming home before the other. During my labor which could not be stopped, I asked myself "what if...?" Could I have changed anything in my diet, the way I worked out during pregnancy, or how much I worked (stress levels)? This is one of the many scenarios I have grappled with since becoming a mom, thinking "what if?" My oldest son was recently diagnosed with ADHD. Being his first year in "big boy school," this mom has cried lots of happy and sad tears. From...
Raising children is milestones and the moments in between. A baby’s first smile. A baby’s first step. A baby’s first word. Milestones can be precious and exciting, albeit bittersweet. When a “first” happens, it is a sign that they really are growing up. The baby milestone is now in the past. It is a beautiful time. But then there are other milestones that are not as magical. For example, there is the night when your toddler learns how to climb out of their crib. As a Mom, you are laying there, licking the wounds of the day, ready to watch an infinitely more loaded episode of Vanderpump Rules (now that Scandavol has broken the internet). And then you hear what sounds...
