When my husband and I first found out I was pregnant 5 months ago we were so surprised and frankly, in disbelief. There were genuine conversations where we couldn't believe this was real and didn't even know how it happened. My constant nausea, projectile vomiting, and extreme fatigue proved that yes, this was in fact a real pregnancy. But nevertheless, it didn't feel real. Even after I crossed that major milestone of getting out of the first trimester. Although we started getting questions on "what do you think you're having?" I feel like I couldn't even wrap my head around the gender or sex of our baby because it felt too soon and a little silly given our history...
I was recently strolling through my second favorite store that takes all my money, only second to the beautiful Target, Hobby Lobby. I glanced over and saw a bag that said “Enjoy the Ride.” I immediately was attracted to it. Life is a wild ride. My hope for you is that we all enjoy this ride called Motherhood. Some of us are raising tiny newborns, teenagers, middle schoolers or all of the above. We are all in different stages, but we all have one common thing – we are Mamas. I hope you enjoy the ride through the 2AM feedings. Soak in the sweet baby snuggles, perfect baby breath and little toes. Soon this baby will sleep through the night,...
January 14, 2015 6:00 pm “Beven, I’m coming to get y’all. Get ready.” “What’s wrong? What happened?” “Nothing … Just be ready when I get there.” I listened to his words, but I have known this man for over half my life and I heard how wrong everything was in the sharp cracks of his voice. The usually short ride to LSU was painstakingly long as I relived 15 years’ worth of memories as I anxiously waited for the opportunity to hold my best friend. I know the specialist talked for a while as I held his weak body against mine. However, as tears streamed down my cheeks, the only words that resonated were “He has less than 24 hours.” Saying Goodbye I thought we...
With any client that I have in therapy, one of our most important tasks is to build rapport. Just imagine being in the client’s position -- you walk in to a total stranger’s office and you are expected to bare your soul? To trust that they have your best interest at heart? Or that they even know what they are talking about? No. It just doesn’t work that way. Most of the time when I have a new client, we begin by discussing their reason for coming in, but I also ask about everyday things. I want to know their kids’ names, if they have a dog, how they spend their free time and many other things about them. I...
I'm one of those moms who seems to be able to do it all. I admittedly have a lot on my plate, and while it may seem ironic, I've only ever added more the longer I've been working. Like many of us, I parent, work full-time, volunteer with different organizations, have hobbies, and even kick back and let my hair down whenever I want to. Over the years, I've mastered the art of balancing all of my interests right along with raising my children. But none of this could ever happen without my husband, my partner. He and I are both very independent people. We joke all the time that, as cruel as it may sound, neither of us needs the...
