A Typical Day With Dad

{For just this week, we are handing over our computers to the men in our lives and turning this little piece of the world wide web into Red Stick DADS Blog!  Read along with their joys and their struggles, and find out why we are so very thankful to have these awesome dads in our lives.} My wife and I have a daughter who is 3.5 years old going on 15, and a new son who is 4 months old. While I would love to explain a typical day with both children (which is more an exercise of keeping the 3 year old busy and/or alive and the 4 month old fed), I will instead describe a typical day when my daughter and...

Some of which we tackle head on, some we reluctantly work through, and some we tend to avoid as long as possible. Unfortunately, “the sex talk” often falls under the latter category. As a counselor who deals with parents and children alike, I don’t think this is because of a general distaste for the subject matter...

It's not because I don't like being an adult, I really do, but my childhood was a pretty good one. If you did not have a childhood that you enjoyed, I am really sorry. I'm a naturally empathetic person, and anytime I start saying anything happy and positive about my life, I automatically think,...
I homeschool my children and I never imagined that this would be my life, but I'm so glad that it is. I went to the same private school from Kindergarten to 12th grade, but it's not the same education as when I attended 20 years ago. The public school in our community is good; I mean, families move to this parish just to attend our schools. I know many of the elementary teachers personally and they are fantastic people who really love their job and their students. There are 2 more private schools within about 30 minutes of our house, but they have the same problems that my alma mater has. Here is the honest reason why I don’t send my children to...
Summer is officially upon us! The temperature (and humidity) is steadily rising, and  your little darlings are home from school for the summer and constantly searching for ways to beat the heat. Popsicles are surely one of childhood's simplest pleasure, but unfortunately the boxed grocery store variety can contain ingredients that are less than appealing. With multiple teaspoons of sugar per popsicle, your kids may find sweet relief from the heat but with some pretty unhealthy ingredients. Making your own popsicles is quick and easy, (seriously, you can have a batch ready to go into the freezer in about 5 minutes) and a great way to combine healthful ingredients with a tempting sweet treat that even adults will enjoy! I'll...
