I’m not sure that there is a polite way to say this, but I don’t want to talk about my body with you. I understand that we’ve come to a point in our culture that talking about bodies is pervasive and almost expected but still, I have no interest in discussing my body with you. Not when I was a kid or a teen or when I was pregnant or even when I lost weight. There are just so many more interesting things about me.  A Lifetime of Awkward Conversations When I was about 7, I remember someone commenting that I had thick thighs. I was a pretty average-sized kid, but my build was such that as a child and teen,...

Finding Time for Fitness

Let's face it, our days as moms are FULL and often downright exhausting. Squeezing in time to workout can too often become our last priority. Over the past many months I've made it my goal to be more consistent with my exercise routine. Let me be honest, my commitment to physical activity had become nearly non-existent. I had come up with and exhausted just about every excuse in the book to get out of exercising. My body, my weight and overall energy were definitely suffering. Things had to change! I had to make my well-being a priority because when I feel good and get regular exercise I'm a more well-balanced person for my family. While I'm not at the gym...
Hey Mommas, I'm just like you. I'm taking care of the kiddos, making sure they get everything they need and tending to my husband. Often that leaves very little time for Momma to take care of herself. Honestly, I get it! Yoga was the last thing I thought I could squeeze in to do for myself. I have a full-time job, a part-time job doing business and digital media consulting, and another part- time job managing the nursing schedule for my son's care and running his personal care attendant agency. There is no time left for ME. But amidst the recent flood relief efforts and the taking care of everyone else, a sweet and wise friend reminded me that I...
For me a new year brings the urge to get healthy and fit not only for myself but for my family. With it came bootcamp three days a week, extra workouts in the evenings, and the desire to give our nutrition a serious edit. You see, this health and fitness driven desire I get usually gets into full swing right around Lent, and this year all liquid calories made the cut. So there I was, with the grand idea to consume water and nothing else --  and a long 40 days and 40 nights ahead of me. A little back story on how much of a soda addict I am not: growing up, we never had sodas in the house....
A few months ago, I received a Fitbit as a birthday gift from a group of friends. Everyone should have friends like that in their lives - people who get together to buy you something just so they don't have to hear you talk about how much you're *really* thinking about buying one for yourself. These people are awesome and they know who they are - but they have NO IDEA what they've done. I'm a little obsessed with it. Is it just because it's new? Or because I don't like to lose (even to myself)? Or because these things are addictive? You be the judge. In the vein of classic Jeff Foxworthy, can you relate? You might be obsessed with your Fitbit...
