Who thinks an animated movie will help them discuss the most difficult topic in humanity? I didn't. And yet, that's exactly what happened! I struggled with the word “death” for a while when I talked to my five year-old son. If someone died, I faltered in telling him. I would say that person “is not here anymore” or “passed away” or “went to be with God.” I didn’t have the words to explain death to his little questioning and curious mind. So I did what most parents do. I worked around it. Which for me meant that I totally avoided it. I bristled when I heard someone say the words “death” or “died” around him. I tensed up if I...
To My Child with Cystic Fibrosis: Please Outlive Me There are times where it hits me out of nowhere. Brushing my teeth, driving to work, folding laundry … times where I am doing the most mundane things and my guard is down. It’s at those times that my mind reminds me “You might have to say goodbye to him sooner than you would like.” Our son has an incurable, life-threatening chronic illness. Jax has cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an unpredictable, life-shortening genetic disease. It’s an ugly disease that causes a myriad of complications, mainly lung infections and respiratory failure. We found out about cystic fibrosis on a Friday afternoon. Jax was eight days old, and it had been a long day....
“When are you going to have another baby?” “Do you want an only child?” “Mommy, when can I be a big brother?” I’ll bet most couples have had these questions asked of them at one time or another. But for couples experiencing secondary infertility, these questions hurt. Couples who have had a previous pregnancy often think of themselves as having "normal" fertility, but this isn't always the case. Secondary infertility, or the inability to conceive subsequent biological children, can be frustrating, emotionally taxing, but is not uncommon. Recent statistics suggest that more than 3 million women of childbearing age in the U.S. who have one biological child have difficulty getting pregnant or carrying another to term. And roughly 800,000 married women with...
Earlier this week, I posted about my initial journey into breastfeeding my son with a dairy allergy. It was a struggle for a few months, but I eventually got my rhythm in the new dairy-free lifestyle. I wasn't immune to the ups and downs of breastfeeding though. I learned the hard way that mint tea is not conducive to producing plenty of milk. Thankfully Fenugreek came to my rescue. As he got older I struggled to keep up with his appetite, producing barely enough each day. Adding to my stash didn't seem to be an option anymore, but my deep freezer was stocked so I was content. The busy holiday season came, and I got my annual cold. It wasn't a...
As I recounted in yesterday's post, at 8 weeks old we found out my son had a dairy allergy. Suddenly I had new dairy-free dietary restrictions in order to continue nursing him. Cooking all my meals at home and reading every label became the new normal. It was a struggle in the beginning to adapt, but once I adjusted I quickly saw the benefits. In an effort to make the transition a little easier for other moms who may be going through the same thing, I've compiled a list of my favorite dairy-free and soy-free* grocery items, restaurants, and information. Having to Cut the Cheese Part 2 {Guide to a Dairy-Free Diet} Grocery Shopping: I shopped around multiple stores to find foods I...
