Mental Health Matters

We don’t need another headline to tell us. We don’t have to wait for another hashtag or tragedy for this to be a priority. All we have to do is look around. Watch the face of your pastor and his wife and see the fatigue as they carry the burdens of many. Pay attention to the Facebook posts of your co-workers and friends and notice how much frustration and loneliness you see in a day. Listen to the weary tone in the voice of a mom in the grocery store, as she tries to wrangle her kids, and gather items to feed her family. It’s all around us, and we either miss it or ignore it daily - the cries...
Editor’s Note :: this post is one mom’s personal journey with intermittent fasting. If you are interested in implementing intermittent fasting into your own lifestyle, please consult a medical professional. Hello. My name is Kristen and I have food issues. I know that I'm not alone and in wanting others to feel the same way, I'm trying not to be shy about sharing.  I grew up in a house with both parents and pretty happy. My parents loved and encouraged me. I was an athlete, fit compared to any throughout my childhood. However - (and there's always a "however") - HOWEVER, my mother never liked herself. I mean, she never TOLD me this outright, but kids are pretty intuitive. I could...
There is no question that childhood obesity is a growing epidemic in the United States today. Our relationship with food is so flawed, and we eat too much food that isn't real food. According to the Center for Disease Control, childhood obesity is linked to a number of different health issues, including high blood pressure, diabetes, breathing problems as well as lower self esteem and social problems such as bullying and stigma. It is a serious issue, with an estimated 1 in 3 American kids qualifying as "obese."  With statistics like these, I believe that it is my responsibility as a parent to do my part to help my children learn to eat balanced meals and portion size so that...
When I was younger, I tried out several sports: basketball, softball, cheer-leading, volleyball, swimming, you name it. I had no idea what my interests were, let alone my skill set! My patient parents let me and my three siblings try out whatever was in season, awaiting the day that I learned that basketball wasn't for me.  I learned so much in the process! To this day I can impress my unsuspecting boys with my knowledge of sports, albeit thin. I'm a regular Jane of all trades, master of none. This comes in handy, especially with my oldest, who will switch from learning the butterfly stroke to fielding grounders to perfecting his putting quickly enough to give us whiplash.  He wants to...
As my youngest approached his second birthday, I hit a parenting wall. I had thoughts like "Can postpartum depression be delayed two years? Are my hormones out of whack? Maybe I'm not cut out for the toddler years." Then I started reading "Happiest Toddler on the Block" by Dr. Karp, and a light bulb went off! In part one, he writes "Toddlers are tricky even for experienced parents," and "Your tot's words or deeds may open up feelings of hurt and humiliation from deep in your past." My life as a mom was subconsciously reminding me of issues in my own childhood. It might sound a little kooky, but bare with me. Now that I had two boys who can (and still...
