The Glamour Is Not In The Smoke :: Choose Healthier Air For All The memory of this scene from my childhood is as clear as day. She had tousled blonde hair, bright pink lips and her make-up was perfectly done. Her Jackie Kennedy style sunglasses made her look ultra chic, as did her black tailored suit. As we flew down the highway in her candy red sports car, she would say “You know how lucky you are, kid?” as a cigarette dangled out of her mouth in an almost Clint Eastwood way. It all looked glamorous in the eyes of the naïve...
The longer I am a parent; the longer I am a therapist; the longer I am a human person with feelings and emotions living on this earth, the more I have come to understand the importance of attachment. Attachment is the emotional bond between people in relationships. Beginning from the moment we are born, we are learning about relationships. The way a caregiver responds to a newborn begins laying the foundation for what that child will think, feel and believe about relationships. The way we respond to our children as infants, toddlers, children, teens and even adult children serve to mold their view of what it means to be in relationship. The kind of attachment relationship experienced in childhood will impact...
With nearly $2 million in medical bills for my son already in his 10-year life span, I’ve learned a few things along the way about how to handle medical bills. I’ve learned what to pay, how not to pay what I really don’t owe, and how to resolve hanging issues out there regarding bills I thought my insurance should have covered.  The truth is that insurance companies are in the business of making money. This also includes pharmacies, doctor’s offices, lab services and any other kind of medical vendor. Less than scrupulous companies make money when you pay bills you don’t really owe. If you pay it, there is a small chance you will get it back after following a...

Medicating Myself

I wasn’t always on edge. There was a point in my life where I was as carefree as one could be. The future never concerned me. Worry wasn’t such an obstacle. It wasn’t until I got closer to 25 years old that I felt an emotional shift. The first thing I did was reach out to a therapist. The second thing I did was get a prescription filled. There is still such controversy around taking medication for mental health. People still feel the need to keep it hidden. It should be considered the "last resort." For me, medication was, and still is, a lifesaver. I have Generalized Anxiety Disorder and Depression. Without medication, I am not myself. For me, in...
Two summers ago, our middle son, Atticus, had a near-drowning experience at a pool party. Miraculously, Atticus made a full recovery after spending several weeks in a PICU in Baton Rouge and completing physical therapy. Today, you would never know such an event ever took place in his very short life because he's a very normal, six-year-old kid who just joined a swim team. But, I do want to give my account of what happened that day to help generate more understanding of drowning and how parents can be proactive in preventing it. My wife, three kids, and I headed out to the party on a Sunday afternoon in August following church for a typical mid-afternoon kids' pool party. Both of...
