Earlier this week, I posted about my initial journey into breastfeeding my son with a dairy allergy. It was a struggle for a few months, but I eventually got my rhythm in the new dairy-free lifestyle. I wasn't immune to the ups and downs of breastfeeding though. I learned the hard way that mint tea is not conducive to producing plenty of milk. Thankfully Fenugreek came to my rescue. As he got older I struggled to keep up with his appetite, producing barely enough each day. Adding to my stash didn't seem to be an option anymore, but my deep freezer was stocked so I was content. The busy holiday season came, and I got my annual cold. It wasn't a...
In a recent discussion with an acquaintance about irrational fear (of storms), we were trying to suss out the root of her issue. The conversation turned light and funny when we both playfully poked fun at her ideas of what could happen. We were laughing at some of the ridiculousness and among that admitted cause for some valid concern. Yes, storms can totally be dangerous. No, a grey cloud does NOT mean that lightning is going to kill us all. We joked that being struck by lightning is the default measuring stick to communicate how often something isn’t going to happen. “You have a better chance of being struck by lightning than …(fill in the it’s-totally-not-going-to-happen thing here).” Her goal after our conversation:...
I was one of the lucky ones for whom breastfeeding happened pretty naturally with my son. My milk came in just fine, we had no problems with latching, and once I got past the initial raw-ness it was painless. My little man had a great appetite and was gaining weight, but he certainly wasn't a chunk either. I went back to work after 8 weeks of maternity leave and struggled with the breast pump, but I had committed to myself and my son to breastfeed as long as I could, so I pushed on. I had been back at work less than a week when I got a text from the family member caring for my son. It was of...
It's hard for me to pinpoint exactly what it feels like to live with major depression. Exhausting is definitely one word to describe it. I am constantly tired, both physically and mentally. I can barely get out of bed every morning, despite my husband urging me to get up and take care of our boys. "Mama, wake up it's 7:30am," he'll say. Then before I know it, it's, "Mama, it's 7:45am, time to get up." It's as if his voice is an alarm ring tone that I'm constantly hitting snooze on. In addition to being exhausted all the time, I'm also easily defeated. Things that are probably little annoyances for most people, like arguing with my son about putting his pants on,...

Raising an Older Child

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I learned that there is a lot of information out there about what to do with a baby. How to get your newborn on a sleep schedule or the perfect way to swaddle to keep them snug and warm. There are tons of advice columns for parents of infants and toddlers, but what happens when they get older? What happens when they start moving, talking and walking circles around you? There doesn't seem to be much in the way of articles and blogs on the older child. I am a mom of a 10-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. They are both past the toddler stage. I have learned a few things over the years,...
