My sweet son is tiny ... really tiny. He’ll be three in February and is just starting to outgrow his 12 month sized clothing that he’s been wearing for over a year. His height and weight measurements don’t even fall on the growth chart, but he his growing slowly but surely. Really his small stature should come as no shock. I’m only 5”2’ and have mostly shopped in the petite section my entire adult life. My husband is only 5’5” and still has to have his pants hemmed despite buying the shortest inseam available. There is no denying that my son isn’t genetically destined to be a large guy. People always ask if he was a preemie. Weighing 7lbs 1oz at...
It's one of my favorite times of the year, when fall is in full force, and people are cheering for their favorite team. School has been in session for a few months, and we are in a regular routine. We can say who we are rooting for, and we can say what we like about our team. We can also say what we don't like about the other teams or their fans. It's easy to label people for who they cheer for or what they stand for, whether it's football or something else.  As a parent, I hear other labels. There are labels that are so easy for us to use to describe other parents or their children. But our...
A few months ago, I wrote about our struggle with whether to send our July baby to kindergarten or red-shirt her. We ultimately decided to go ahead and enroll her in kindergarten. After lots of in depth discussions with her daycare director and 2 months of speech therapy, we were confident that she was ready. It's been one month, and I'm even more certain that kindergarten was the right choice. Our daughter has learned so much, and we love her teachers and school. Thankfully, she's excited to go to school each day and has adjusted to her new school with no issues. Me on the other hand? That's a different story. It turns out that I am the one who...
Disclosure :: our Breast Cancer Awareness series is sponsored by Baton Rouge General.  My Mom Has Breast Cancer and I Feel Helpless This is one of those posts that you dread writing - because you know you're going to have to unpack a lot of the feelings you're uncomfortable feeling because there's someone else out there that will relate. It's also a pretty selfish perspective so putting it ON THE INTERNET feels a little raw and gross but YOU'LL KNOW that I know so ... we'll all agree to start there. My parents have been married for 43 years. They've lived in the same house for 39 of them. Not super-big on change, my folks. Last year, their house flooded with almost six...
Maxwell Gruver. That name kept me awake at night. Prior to becoming a mom, I would have heard Maxwell’s story, then brushed it aside with a shrug of the shoulder and a “oh, that’s sad” comment. My life now falls somewhere on the spectrum of remembering how easily it could have been to die at the hands of collegiate peer pressure mixed in with alcohol and bad decisions versus the mom in me feeling rage and sadness at this senseless death. Maxwell Gruver died one night at a fraternity party. The details are still unknown, but what we do know is that Maxwell was in his freshman year of college. I imagine that his parents delivered him to campus with high...
