To the Daddy Who Forgot His Baby in His Car …

To the Daddy who forgot his baby in his car …

I’m not here to judge you. I’m not here to bring you down any further than you already are at this point.

As a mom, I know how easily it is to forget things. I am a mother, I was born with a maternal instinct and I too know that mistakes can be made. I have found myself too often with a car full of kids, an infant too quiet to be noticed and thought for a split second that I may have left him at home. Just to realize he is in his car seat sleeping so peacefully that I too didn’t even realize it.

carseatI am also a wife. A wife to a husband. A wife to a daddy. I am a wife to the daddy of my children that has been a parent longer than I have. You see, this husband of mine lives in the moment. He thinks in the moment. Whatever is in front of him is what’s got his interest. He gets it honestly, it’s just who he is. I know that never in a million years he would intentionally forget them or do anything to harm them. But what I do know is this. He was not born with a maternal instinct. He is not a mamma. He does not know what it’s like to account for his kids every single second of a day. Like I said, it’s just who he is. Do I think that he would ever forget one of his kids in his truck? No. Do I think that such an unimaginable thing could happen to him? Yes. The reality of it is this: it could happen to anyone. It could very well happen to me with that quiet little infant sleeping in the back seat.

In this season of life, I wish now more than ever that social media didn’t exist. As if you didn’t already lose something so grand to you, now you’ve got everyone chiming in on how you didn’t love her. How you are worthless. How you didn’t deserve her. Well, I’m not here for that. I don’t know you. I don’t know your past. I don’t know what led up to that terrible day. But I do know that you are a human. We all are. All of us are capable of just as much as the other.

Today, my heart hurts for that sweet baby that is no longer here with us. My heart hurts for your family. My heart hurts for the world we live in today. My heart hurts for you. From deep down, it hurts so bad.

As a parent, I know you’ve lost a part of yourself. There is nothing that will ever replace that missing piece. My one hope today is that you and your family find peace in this terrible time.

Cassie is a hustle-from-home mom to four boys, Blaison, Kade, Kellan and Matty. She worked as a payroll administrator for nine years up until the arrival of their third son, Kellan. After realizing the costs of daycare for three little ones, and the sudden growth in her business, Cassie Treuil Photography, she left her job to focus on building her business and raising her four boys. In between shuffling kids to carpool and football practice, she can be found planning events for RSMB and editing the sweetest little faces of BR. On the weekends, catch her between the football field and Highland Road Park cheering on her Catholic High Bear. She loves her family, an occasional juice cleanse, weekends on the water and her tiny town of Port Allen.

  1. I agree to everything that you said. Mr. Mercer keep your head up and know that there is only one man in this world who can judge you and that is God. My heart goes out to you and your wife and your family. KEEP GOD FIRST AND HE WILL BRING YALL THROUGH THIS!

  2. It’s good to hear a non judgmental response to this tragic accident. I truly believe he didn’t intentionally leave his baby girl in the car. What we all need to do is lift them up in prayer. They need comfort and strength at this time.

  3. This is so beautiful and so very well said. I too wish Social Media didn’t exist. It’s so easy to say “that could never be me or that would never be me” . How do you know. You don’t know. So never say what you wouldn’t do. No one knows what’s our plan in life is. Just know that father and family has a beautiful angel of protection watching over them. Please find comfort in knowing she will live on in your heart. God bless each of you???

  4. Thank you for sharing such a beautiful message of forgiveness and compassion. The Mercers are a sweet young couple suffering from a tragedy that will haunt them forever. My heart and prayers go out to that sweet angels parents.

  5. This needed to be said. Too many people out there judging. I’m a peds ICU nurse and I have seen it happen before … All to normal, busy, hard working parents. This family desperately needs prayers and compassion. They have mine!

  6. Cassie. I am the sister of the father and I can’t tell you how much comfort you brought to my lil brother when we showed it to him.

As a family, we are absolutely devastated but are holding tight to each other and God’s sovereignty.

Thank you for being such a light to a tunnel of darkness. I will treasure your words in my heart because of your humanity towards someone you never met. The irony is I had just posted on my own social media page early last week that I really wish we could be nicer to one another and withhold judgment cuz…

It’s all THEORY into its your REALITY!

    Love you oodles!
