What Mom Really Wants for Mother’s Day

It’s hard to miss that Mother’s Day is quickly approaching. TV ads tempt us to buy a sparkling piece of jewelry and retail emails remind you to get those flowers ordered. Book the brunch reservation now because it’s sure to be packed. All those things sound lovely, but let’s be honest about what Mom really wants this Mother’s Day: love, appreciation, and a little bit of quality time.

Being a mom is an amazingly rewarding, yet often thankless job. We keep everything together (often while juggling a full-time position outside the home), and put our children’s priorities above ours more often than not. Even when we’re beyond exhausted and our patience is shot from keeping up with the kids’ endless supply of energy, an ‘I love you’ from your child is enough to forget about the struggles.

Third only to winter holidays and back-to-school for retail spending, it’s easy to consider Mother’s Day a Hallmark holiday. But taking a day to acknowledge the tireless effort we put towards raising our kids is a welcomed treat. If you’re looking for a way to thank your mom for everything she does this Mother’s Day (ok so you’re probably a mom if you’re reading this, so if you want to forward this on to that certain someone in your life who should read it, go right ahead!), here are a few thoughts from real moms:

1. Love us.

A sweet note or toddler scribble and an extra big hug go a long way. Picturing Daddy helping the kids make a card is enough to melt the heart.

2. Appreciate us.

We probably take care of much more than you think. Step in our shoes for a bit and tackle something on our never-ending to do list. Cook dinner and clean up (Food always tastes better when you don’t have to cook!). Mom cars could always go for a good cleaning. Fight the bedtime battle for us. Just say ‘thank you.’

3. Treat us.

In the thick of motherhood it’s easy to put ourselves last. Let us enjoy some time for ourselves. A few extra minutes to sleep in. A pedicure. An afternoon shopping without kids in tow. Even a quiet evening to indulge in a good book. Or even a planned day of quality time with the whole family would be appreciated.

Now don’t get me wrong, flowers are always welcome and jewelry will never be turned down. Of course I can’t speak for all mothers out there, but the common theme from every mom I’ve spoken to is simple. We love what we do, but it’s always nice to feel a little extra appreciated. It doesn’t take too much to accomplish that, just a little thought and a lot of love.

From all of us at Red Stick Moms, wishing all of you amazing moms a happy, blessed Mother’s Day filled with everything and everyone you love!
