Understanding your Dental Insurance

As a mom, you have enough on your plate and you certainly watch a lot of money fly out the door (*cough* the outfit you just put on your kid for them to tear it at the playground). We want to talk about one place where you can not only keep a healthy smile on your face but utilize all you pay for… dental insurance. Let us explain.

Your dental insurance runs on a calendar year. Which means all of your benefits start over on January 1, 2020. You can save hundreds of dollars by using your benefits before the end of the year. No need to toss away money on services you’ve already paid for.

The first thing you should do is contact your dental provider and ask what benefits you have already used and what’s still available. If you don’t have a dental provider, Bencaz Family Dentistry is happy to help make sense of your dental insurance (we also offer a discount dental plan if you don’t have any). You may also want to contact your insurance provider and ask, “Are any benefits being cut or reduced in next year’s policy?” Typically, preventative procedures like dental cleanings, x-rays, and exams are covered. But, will they cover veneers, teeth whitening, or braces?

Schedule an appointment with your preferred dental provider as soon as possible because many dentists fill up this time of year for this exact reason.

Top 3 Reasons To Schedule An Appointment Soon

  • You will want to max out your yearly limit and take advantage of any covered preventative procedures. Most insurance will only pay out a certain amount per person, per year, for dental treatments. If you don’t use it, you lose it. Many of the restorative procedures require several phases, so you’ll want to start now!
  • Maybe you have been utilizing your policy to it’s max and hit that deductible or premium. Once you hit that, it’s good for that calendar year only. Make sure you make the most of all procedures that make sense now met. From preventative to more extensive. Your dental provider will be able to help you make this determination.
  • Preventative care saves you a lot of money! Most policies cover preventative procedures like cleanings to prevent or catch simple problems. A simple cavity can easily turn into a root canal later. You can avoid costly and extensive treatments by keeping up with your regular exams and cleanings.
