Call me old-fashioned, but I love serving my man. I love being the woman who builds her man up, encourages him, makes him the best sandwich there ever was, and send him off with a kiss. I think when we first got into a relationship with the man we fall in love with, we all experience a selfless kind of love. The kind of love where we put the other, first. But the truth is, life happens, kids happen, routines happen, we experience ups and downs and life is not always easy. When things get busy and heavy, it’s very easy to fall into ruts, and the idea of servant-hood quickly becomes less desirable. In today’s culture, women have...

Our second child recently made his First Communion. He had spent months preparing for this coming-of-age sacrament at our church and had gotten so nervous about doing it correctly that he cried during a practice. This is not uncommon for this little guy, who struggles with signs of anxiety. When this happened, like other, similar situations in his life, my husband and I helped him navigate by providing as much information and direction as possible. Still, as life will inevitably require, we make him practice being more forthcoming and self-advocating. For example, despite his "shyness," we've made him order for himself at a restaurant since the time he learned how to talk. While we've done that with all of our...
In 2015, four months after my son was born, I was diagnosed with Graves’ Disease. Graves’ is the most common disease related to hyperthyroidism. For about two months prior, I had noticed an increase in anxiety, irritability, frequent nausea which culminated in rapid weight loss, night sweats, and insomnia. While I didn’t mind the weight loss, I knew I couldn’t spend my entire motherhood an anxious, sweaty mess. Thankfully, I was diagnosed after my first visit with my General Practitioner. He noticed my thyroid was enlarged and ordered a myriad of tests, including a full thyroid panel. When I got my results, my thyroid numbers were literally off the charts. Anti-thyroid medication got my numbers down, and I was counseled to...
It is not a shock to any of us to learn how much Americans waste on a daily basis. We live in a world where we have curbside garbage that is picked up multiple times weekly, it disappears and we do not think much about it. The average American generates 4 POUNDS of trash every day and about 1.5 tons of solid waste per year. Recently as I was reflecting on Earth Day and how beautiful Louisiana is this time of year, I began thinking about my childhood. I grew up in the late 80s and early 90s and for part of my childhood, I was raised on a farm in the middle of Baton Rouge. My grandparents did their best...
