I’m not sure that there is a polite way to say this, but I don’t want to talk about my body with you. I understand that we’ve come to a point in our culture that talking about bodies is pervasive and almost expected but still, I have no interest in discussing my body with you. Not when I was a kid or a teen or when I was pregnant or even when I lost weight. There are just so many more interesting things about me.  A Lifetime of Awkward Conversations When I was about 7, I remember someone commenting that I had thick thighs. I was a pretty average-sized kid, but my build was such that as a child and teen,...

Unforeseen Gratitude

I remember it like it was yesterday - the call from the pediatrician informing me that she had referred us to Children's Hospital in New Orleans. When Salem was 9 months old, I noticed that she was sitting strangely. It wasn't a normal slouch, but was more like she was almost sitting on her lower back instead of her bottom. I didn't know if I was overreacting or if it was something worth looking into. We brought it up at her next appointment, and the doctor scheduled X-rays to see for sure. That's when I received the call that it was more severe and we needed to see a specialist in New Orleans. In a moment, something that I had never even...
My childhood was less than desirable. The older I get, the more I realize that. At the time, nothing felt out of place. I don’t think I knew any better. No one was there to tell me “This isn’t normal.” My sister and I were raised by a part-time single mother (our father worked out of state 11 months out of the year). Our mom was beautiful and took care of herself. She loved reading, working out, decorating, cooking and listening to old albums. She also loved Valium, yelling at us, dragging me from one side of the house to the other by my hair, and making me feel bad about myself. My mother was mentally ill.  Family functions were mostly uncomfortable....

Finding Time for Fitness

Let's face it, our days as moms are FULL and often downright exhausting. Squeezing in time to workout can too often become our last priority. Over the past many months I've made it my goal to be more consistent with my exercise routine. Let me be honest, my commitment to physical activity had become nearly non-existent. I had come up with and exhausted just about every excuse in the book to get out of exercising. My body, my weight and overall energy were definitely suffering. Things had to change! I had to make my well-being a priority because when I feel good and get regular exercise I'm a more well-balanced person for my family. While I'm not at the gym...
A few months ago my husband was complaining about some heartburn or something (I don't know--I assumed he was whining about some man-cold and ignored it on principle). Later on though, he woke me up in the middle of the night, notifying me that he was driving himself to the emergency room. I drowsily asked about his condition as seriously as I could muster given 1) it was like 3AM 2) I figured he was being dramatic and 3) it had already been a long weekend of listening to three kids' whining and 4) Momma needs her sleep. A couple hours later, I notified his mom who came over to stay with the kids so I could go up to...
