It goes without saying that if you are raising two or more daughters (and let's face it, sons) in the South, they will match occasionally. And by "occasionally" I mean all the time. Special occasions call for carefully thought out coordinating outfits from the top of their bow heads to the bottom of their tiny sandaled feet. Sometimes a monogram is added for good measure. You know, so you can tell which kid is which. Color coordinating can serve the same purpose as the monogram while allowing the children to show a bit of their individual personality. Matching clothing on children is not just for special occasions. Nope. My children can be caught twinning when out for a fun-filled day on the...
Soda, pop, cola and Coke; whatever you call them soft drinks have become a main stream beverage in our country and are readily accessible to quench our thirst at check out lines EVERYWHERE! Confession: I'm a self proclaimed former diet soda addict. Growing up in the land of potluck dinners and southern barbecues two-liter beverages were ever present at all meals. Believe me, as a child and well into adulthood I drank my fair share of soda (and other sugar laden beverages). I myself gave up the addictive soda drinking habit many, many years ago when, with a little self-guided research, discovered I was having some nasty side effects when I didn't get my daily dose of soda. In my...
Having postpartum depression (PPD) is hard. I had it after the birth of both of my sons, and I still live with daily depression. And I'm not alone. According to the website Postpartum Progress, between 10 to 15% of women will experience a postpartum mood disorder, whether that be PPD, postpartum anxiety, postpartum OCD or postpartum psychosis. That's a lot of struggling mamas! Through my journey with PPD, and by connecting with other moms who are afflicted, I've come to realize that there are still so many misconceptions about what PPD is and how it manifests. So I reached out to my friends, and together we compiled this list of 5 things moms with PPD need you to know. 1. Yes, we...
I had several expectations about what life would be like when my son was born -- sleepless nights, thousands of diapers, sweet baby snuggles, a love like no other ... the list could keep going. What I didn’t expect were bizarre/rude/unsolicited comments that strangers would make regarding my child and/or parenting. Comments from strangers often leave me feeling annoyed, like the lady who asked me how old my son was shortly after he was born. When I told her that he was nine weeks old, she accused me of lying, saying he was too small to be nine weeks old. First of all, he was a preemie. Secondly, why would I lie about that? But this story isn’t about those...
A long work day concludes. My sons are running around, coloring, and watching a cartoon. I am chopping vegetables in the kitchen. My knife knocks the cutting board rhythmically. Onions, celery, tomatoes, carrots, and potatoes slide into my prep bowl. I find a song to groove to on my iPhone. The butter sizzles in my green Dutch oven. I season the butter and dump the onions in to simmer. I work through the rest of the recipe. The vegetables sauté, filling the house with a lovely aroma, and I stir the mixture. I add other ingredients as I go along, savoring the process. From the living room I hear my husband and my boys talking and laughing with the...
