Seven Baby Projects I’ll Be Sewing in the Third Trimester
I’ve officially made it to the third trimester and am in the home stretch! This little boy will be here before we know it, and I’ve been shopping — especially with all the sales this month — clicking “add to cart” on just about everything I think he might need (and let’s be honest, a few things he probably doesn’t). But now that this baby and this belly is growing, energy is waning, and I’m spending more time cozied up on the couch. It’s the perfect time to end the shopping spree in exchange for a more creative outlet.
Instead of just waiting (impatiently) for baby’s big debut, I’m planning to put these hands to work and channel all this nesting energy into making a few handmade items. There’s something so special about slowing down, touching soft fabrics, and stitching together something meaningful while waiting for my little guy. It gives me something to focus on, helps pass the time, and makes me feel even more connected to him. I’ve got a whole list of projects I plan to tackle in the third trimester.
Here’s what I’m making for baby boy before he makes his grand entrance!
1. C-Shaped Baby Pillow
These pillows feel like an inescapable part of motherhood, they creep into your orbit whether as a thought or in the physical form. They’re so common, you can score one super cheap secondhand! The shape is simple, making it a great beginner project and a quick sew for experienced hands. Best of all, it can be made on any budget and personalized however you’d like, from a thrifted bedsheet and poly-fil to luxe fabrics in your favorite fiber or character/theme. I can’t wait to make one (plus extra covers) for baby boy!
I found a free pattern on Made by Marzipan and a corresponding YouTube video for the classic shape. If you’re familiar with pattern hacking, you can adjust the shape to any of the more modern designs.
2. Baby Lounger Pillow / Baby Nest
There’s a lot of chatter online about baby loungers — do your research. I plan to use one so baby has a comfy place to rest (while awake) and not being held. These loungers can run over $100, but thankfully, the DIY route is filled with tons of sewing patterns and tutorial videos. The basic structure? A lower center with higher padded sides. The baby nest is a slightly more complex shape verses the baby lounger pillow, but both are totally doable for beginners. And you can add length to the pattern if you have a big baby and as the baby grows into a toddler.

- Baby Nest: This one offers more opportunities for customization with the use multiple fabrics, add quilting, and get fancy with accessories. Try this popular YouTube tutorial by Owlipop DIY with 1.2 million views or Createaholic’s written tutorial by Fanny Zedenius.
3. Crinkle Tag Toy
Don’t toss that cereal bag just yet! It’s the perfect material to make a crinkle toy, an easy favorite for little hands. This project is a great scrap buster for experienced DIYers but also works with fabric quarters from any craft store. And no need to go broke on ribbons: this value pack is under $6!
Crinkle toys help babies practice grasping and provide sensory stimulation. They make a great first toy! There are tons of tutorials online, but I really like this one by My Mum Makes.
4. Tinkle Teepee or Peepee Teepee
I’m not convinced this is a necessity, but hey — we’re keeping idle hands busy! I’ve heard baby boys can surprise you during diaper changes. This quick, cheeky project can be made with scrap fabric, fat quarters, and old towels. Super easy, super useful.
Though you can buy them on Etsy or Amazon, but it’s way more fun to DIY. Check out Patchwork Posse’s video or written instructions.
5. Stroller Handle Leather Covers
A simple and chic way to upgrade an older stroller? Leather handlebar covers! While scrolling Etsy, I found Lux and Leather, which offers 100% leather (and vegan leather) covers for over 55 stroller models. They also have belly bar covers in various colors, with lace-up and zip-up options.
The customization possibilities are endless, and they add a luxe touch. I already placed my order and am looking forward to a Sunday evening of lacing up my stroller handles. Im excited to see my stroller all jazzed up! Browse their collection at Lux and Leather’s website or Etsy shop.
6. Stroller Liner
Speaking of stroller upgrades, next up is a custom stroller liner. My stroller seat isn’t machine washable (thanks to built-in boards), and with the inevitability of blowouts, snack crumbs, and spills, a removable liner will save the day. It also protects the seat from sun damage.
While you can buy generic liners in primary colors, I prefer something more personalized. Pattern makers have got us covered! You can search for a pattern for your stroller model or use a universal one. Try this PDF pattern from Muffy Duck Designs that includes matching strap covers. Muffy Duck Designs also offers stroller specific patterns as well!
7. Leather Purse (Babylon Leather or POPSEWING)
Now this one’s just for me! I’ve had this leather bag project on my to-do list for months, and now’s the perfect time to tackle it. These DIY kits don’t require a sewing machine, just two needles and a whole lot of patience. The end result? A gorgeous, hand-stitched leather bag that’s totally worth the effort. I’m really looking forward to this project!
The kits come with everything you need and include video tutorials. I’ve been eyeing two brands: Babylon Leather and POPSEWING. Both offer so many beautiful styles, bag charms, and the option to buy a completed bag if stitching isn’t your thing.
