After the birth of my first child, my husband and I knew we wanted to wait a while before trying to get pregnant again. At my six-week post-natal checkup, I was ready to have the birth control discussion with my doctor. As a nursing mom, I didn't realize my choice for birth control would be so limited. I discussed all the options with my doctor and settled on having an IUD (intrauterine device) placed. An IUD is a small (about the size of a large paperclip) T-shaped device that is implanted in the uterus and releases a low dose of hormones AND causes disruption of fertilization to prevent pregnancy.  For the device and placement, my insurance would cover all but...
I know that when it comes to healthcare and seeing doctors, it can all be intimidating when they use acronyms and a language we may not understand. But let me encourage you - nobody knows YOUR body and your health better than you. Doctors are providers / vendors ... the same as choosing to shop at a Target instead of Wal-Mart. If you don't find what you like at one, you can always go shop at another. I tell you all this because doctors don't always get it right. I was recently discharged from an emergency room, and if I had taken that doctor's advice as all I needed (and as "law"), I wouldn't be here to share my story...
I was recently watching one of my Friday guilty pleasures, "What Would You Do?" when John Quinones presented a conundrum that was near to my heart: should parents decide what sports their children play? Here was the scenario: a kid would plead with his parent, begging to play football. The parent wouldn't allow it, citing safety reasons. The social scenario, then, was whether strangers would intervene, and, if so, whose side they would support. Although the show presents its scenes somewhat objectively, there is usually a response they're hoping to solicit. The shocker for me, though, was that they seemed to be in support of the pleading child, no matter how scientific or well-founded the parent's logic was. I was frustrated...
