Whether it’s at the grocery store, driving in traffic or a Facebook message board, you’ve all encountered her. You may have even been ‘her’ a few times ( I know I have ). I’m talking about The Rude Mom. The Angry Mom. The all around Bad Attitude, Negative Nancy Mom. She’s always quick to roll her eyes, scoff at what your saying or shoot a glance that could kill any unfortunate soul who rubbed her the wrong way. Sure we all have our bad days. Sometimes when the kids are screaming in my ear, I don’t quite have the patience to deal with a well meaning stranger in the checkout lane. Or if I’m feeling particularly irritable I might not...
I've never been able to get much out of any 'how-to' parenting books. Maybe it's the part of me that hates being told what to do, but they never seem to help. A friend knew my distaste for them and suggested Bringing Up Bebe by Pamela Druckerman. After reading just the summary I could tell it was my kind of book. An American journalist, Druckerman is living abroad in France and gives birth to her first child. She quickly begins to notice the differences among French and American parenting styles and subsequently how the children behave. What I enjoy most is that it's simply an observation of some of the differences without saying one is right or wrong. A new perspective...
It was around 11pm and I was hurriedly grabbing a few baby essentials - bottles, blankets, a pacifier... I had just gotten a text from a friend. A girl she went to high school with showed up at her door with a baby and no place else to go. It was a rough situation. I pulled open the drawer and stared at the onesies. Salem was only three months old, having only just outgrown the newborn size. Even in my distraction, I was overcome with emotion. About baby clothes. She no longer fit it them, and it wasn't like I was upset about the actual act of giving them away. They were just HERS. My first baby wore them, once, or...
Last July a series of events led me to co-found a children’s company, The Doll Kind. As any entrepreneur will confirm, launching a startup is super challenging, takes more hours in a week than are available, requires focus you didn’t know you had, and a slight obsession with what you are creating. Add small children to the mix and 'challenging' doesn’t quite cover it. But at the end of each week, I’m fulfilled beyond measure. Having the titles of wife, mom, and now social entrepreneur are helping bring the life I’ve always imagined into focus. Our company, The Doll Kind (TDK), has a mission to empower and inspire a generation of children to create a kinder world, one heart at a...
When I was expecting my daughter in March of 2011, I began scouring the internet for information. I discovered the What to Expect When You're Expecting site and the forums you could be part of based on your due date. Next thing I know, I am part of an online group for moms with babies due in March 2011. The big group was a little overwhelming for me. Over the next few months, we broke off into smaller groups of moms, and from that something wonderful happened! One mom created a small group of around 40 mamas and named us My BFF Mommies. This was over five years ago. I know many moms have opinions on online mom groups or forums, but these...
