To my oldest, you might think this letter is sappy and silly, but believe it or not, I remember what it was like to be turning 12. Feeling like you are in this grey area, not a little kid anymore but not quite a teenager. As your 12th birthday approaches, I hope to offer you a few pieces of advice to keep in mind as you move on to the next chapter of your life. Be your own Leader You don’t have to do what all your classmates are doing. You don’t have to have the newest clothes or shoes. Put yourself on the path to becoming the person you want to be. I don’t ever want you to feel like...
Mornings do not make my soul shine. Mornings are an obligatory precursor to the part of the day when my brain and body can consider what a productive day could be. Because my husband used to be a morning person, I know morning people do exist. He was someone who was genuinely happy to climb out of bed with joie de vivre. It seems unnatural unless you have seen it with your own eyes. However, three toddlers and he too isn’t jumping up to start his day. Obviously, we are not alone in our distaste for early mornings. No alarm is needed in our house, as a screeching toddler will start the day by announcing which sister took off her jammies....
On my way home from dropping my 11-year-old daughter off for her first day of school, I had the radio on WITH commercials, which is rare these days since I am more of a podcast girl. During my twenty minute drive home, I heard three different "improvement" commercials. One for Botox, one for body sculpting, and another for the newest pill that can help you lose those "stubborn 20 pounds." Maybe this is fueled by having a preteen girl who I want to love herself and know her body is perfect just the way she is. Maybe it is from being raised in the 90s and early 2000s with low-rise jeans and women around me searching for the latest way...
Fall is such a fun season to celebrate with the family! All of us at Red Stick Mom know all about this excitement over the cooler months and all things fall related! From sharing our love about fall, fall recipes, and fall crafts, we are here to talk about it all! This pumpkin volcano is a fun spin on a fall tradition and great as a science activity! The pumpkins are finally rolling into Louisiana. Pumpkin carving is a family fun activity we do every year during this month. Our first pumpkins never last until Halloween. This leaves us carving multiple pumpkins throughout the month: thank you Louisiana heat! If your kids are all about bubbly and overflowing fun, this activity will...
My favorite lesson to do with my four-year-olds was on the book “How Full is Your Bucket? ... for Kids.” The concept is that every person has a bucket. At any given moment our bucket could be full, running out, or empty. The book shows ways in which we empty and fill each other’s buckets. The takeaway for the class was that in a kind and loving community we spend time filling each other’s buckets with love and kindness and in return our bucket becomes full also. This book really tries to teach children empathy. To treat others how they want to be treated. To look out for others and also yourself. When becoming a mother I remember other mothers constantly telling me “you...
