Raising an Older Child

When I was pregnant with my daughter, I learned that there is a lot of information out there about what to do with a baby. How to get your newborn on a sleep schedule or the perfect way to swaddle to keep them snug and warm. There are tons of advice columns for parents of infants and toddlers, but what happens when they get older? What happens when they start moving, talking and walking circles around you? There doesn't seem to be much in the way of articles and blogs on the older child. I am a mom of a 10-year-old son and 5-year-old daughter. They are both past the toddler stage. I have learned a few things over the years,...
The average age of first marriage in the United States these days is 28, which is totally insane to me since that is the age I am right now and I've already been married for eight years. I was just 19 years old when I walked down the aisle and committed a lifetime to my partner, Dustin, and while that was undoubtedly one of the best decisions of my life, it's also one I wouldn't necessarily recommend to others. In fact, if our son comes home at 19 and says he's ready to propose to his partner, I'll probably fall out of my chair laughing. Dustin and I had been dating for about a year and a half when he proposed. I knew that I wanted...

Open The Door!

Warrick fell in a heap at the foot of the door.  His tears flowed and he grimaced. “What’s wrong? Why are you crying?” I asked him, kneeling beside him. “I’m missing all the fun,” he responded between deep breaths. It was a Thursday afternoon, and my husband was washing his truck. My son, Warrick, was watching cartoons when my husband invited him outside with him to help with one of his favorite chores. Warrick was exhausted from his school day and did not hear the invite. A few minutes later my husband and our toddler, Xavier, were outside frolicking in the water and washing his truck.  It was at this moment that Warrick saw the fun outside that he was missing. I put...
I know mine does... Thanks to YouTube, Easter eggs are no longer referred to by their proper name in our home. Instead they go by "Surprise Eggs!" When I became pregnant with my second child, most days I was quick to hand my phone off to my then one-year-old son. Out of sheer exhaustion I just could not mentally get up the energy to properly entertain him. At first, it was innocent enough. Baby Einstein videos. A couple clips from Thomas and Friends. But then, eventually Hudson learned to use the buttons. And how to navigate his way down the YouTube wormhole until he eventually landed on Surprise Eggs! If you have found yourself in a moment of weakness like me, where you let...
It's a battle every mom fights daily, no matter how many children she has in the home. The sorting, the stain treating, the washing, and remembering to dry before the wet clothes mold. The folding, the putting away, the hanging. And then there is always that one kid -uh hum, my seven-year-old- that will put clean clothes into the dirty clothes hamper to keep from putting them away. There is no denying that laundry is a BEAST. Over the years, I've used a few different methods for taming the Beast, based on my family size and routine at the time. These methods are not fail proof for every family, and by no means the only ways to fight the battle. 1....
